New Page for Draftees? edit

It seems to me that this page could get awfully full with Rule 5-Draftee names if it continues along the way it is. Would it make sense to create a new page just for Rule 5 Draft selections? Sliver7 13:59, 5 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I went ahead and created a page for Rule 5 draft results. It's got the results of the Major League, Triple-A and Double-A phases for 2003-2005, plus the results of the 1998-2002 Major League phases. If we can find the results for more years, the page may have to be split up (one page per decade? Time period?) I'd like to flesh it out even more (with things like notations on who was traded immediately as a result of the draft or who was returned to their orignal clubs, for example). Any help filling it out would be appreciated, as even doing this much took a lot of effort. Sliver7 16:44, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Phases edit

If anyone has the info on it, can someone explain how the "phases" are handled? There's a major league, Triple-A, and Double-A phase.JurgenHadley 01:05, 9 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Most of this info is already in the Rule 5 section of Major League Baseball transactions, should they be merged? Ebryns427 02:20, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Abreu, Hoffman & Mora: Rule 5 Status edit

I cannot find any proof that Bobby Abreu, Trevor Hoffman or Melvin Mora were ever selected in the Rule 5 Draft.

Both Abreu and Hoffman were selected in the Expansion Draft, not the Rule 5 Draft, in 1997 and 1992 respectively.

Mora was left unproteced during several Rule 5 Drafts in the mid-90's, but was never selected as far as I can tell. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nildem (talkcontribs) 15 August 2006

Ricky Williams edit

What are the thoughts on pro-football player Ricky Williams being on the list? I noticed he was on there at one point. He played 4 years of minor league ball for Philadelphia in the mid-90s. He was then taken by Montreal in the 1998 Rule 5 draft, and immediately sold to Texas. He was selected in the NFL Draft soon after so I don't believe he ever actually reported to Texas' spring training. But I do believe he's worth a mention on the list of Rule 5 selections. I mean, he's at least as notable as the likes of Vaughn Eshelman and Enrique Cruz. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nildem (talkcontribs) 15 August 2006

The difference to me is that Enrique Cruz and Vaughn Eshelman actually played in the major leagues, while Ricky Williams never did. Do we need to mention Tom Glavine on NHL pages because he was drafted to play hockey? It's not terribly important information except for a line in his bio. My vote would be to keep that info in the Ricky Williams article. -Phoenixrod 07:15, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Christy Mathewson?? edit

Just how old is the Rule 5 draft?? Christy Mathewson's page also claims he was taken in it, but considering the MLB amateur draft didn't even exist until 1965, I'm pretty skeptical that the Rule 5 draft has been around since 1900, and if it has, this definitely needs to be mentioned... -Elmer Clark (talk) 21:59, 6 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Josh Hamilton edit

After Josh Hamilton's recent HR Derby extravaganza, lots of IP users keep adding his name to various lists ... even though he's already there. Keep an eye out for redundant listings. -Phoenixrod (talk) 21:27, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

List of draftees long edit

Come on - "Eric Valent" listed? I propose it's limited to All-Stars only. Anyone else can go on the main paige for draftees. 12.152.207.5 (talk) 19:27, 15 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not in CBA edit

The Rule 5 draft is mentioned in the CBA, but not iterated there. The Major League Rules are not the same document as the CBA. (And neither of these are the same as the Official Rules, which are the field rules.) Spark240 (talk) 04:19, 19 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Who's eligible? edit

Am I missing something, or is there no description of what players are eligible to be drafted in the Rule V draft??Pinkvolkswagen (talk) 04:05, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Notable Rule 5 draftees section a bit of a mess edit

Just noticed that the notable selections section was kinda a mess and wanted to bring this to general attention. I know one member recently deleted the "Other notable selections" section, but the remaining sections are a bit of a mess. There is no clear criteria for the "Drafted, but returned, or traded before start of season" section, as several were all-stars, but not all of them, and some players appear in multiple of the three sections. (i.e. Meek and Hamilton) Just wanted to get a gauge of the prevailing sentiment on how this section of the article should be formatted as far as where a player falls before making any changes and angering anyone.
