I do not agree with the redirect to Folk Music. IMHO Roots is pop-music that stays close to its roots: folk, blues etc. Closer then hit-parade pop-music that is more influenced by the current fashion. This means mainly tradional chord-schemes and rithms, acoustic instruments or electric with little emphasis on advanced effects or synthisisers.

Deleting redirects

edit

I can't understand the sense of deleting the redirect but not doing anything with the page, as though there is suddenly no such thing as roots music. As for the connection with World Music, it's well understood within Roots music circles. See, for example, the British publication fRoots magazine. Gwaka Lumpa 19:02, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hi Gwaka. I deleted the redirect because I thought it completely nonsensical, as roots music and world music are not related (unless I'm very much mistaken). I'm not planning on just leaving the page blank, but better a blank page waiting for somone to populate it then a completely misleading redirect. But I see you have reverted, and I won't get into a war. I'll come and write up a proper stub for Roots Music when I have a chance, and we can see what you think about it. Thanks. Actually, that old redirect to Folk Music was rather more accurate, but still not great. I see if I can come up with something pithy ;-) Leeborkman 21:20, 12 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'd say that the description you have that says "Roots music is any music that follows pre-commercial musical traditions." is a pretty good description of World music. The World music article seems to have been revised by someone who believes that eg. Celtic music is not world music, which is stupid, since the term World music was invented by a group of people which includes those who were using it to sell Anglo-Celtic pre-commercial music. What's missing is a page on "American roots music", which is what most of this article is about. I'd suggest:
  1. Move (most of) the content here to American roots music, integrate that with Roots revival and possibly American folk music revival
  2. Make this a disambiguation page that points to Roots revival, American roots music, and World music. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TimNelson (talkcontribs) 11:59, 4 May 2007 (UTC).Reply

Major changes to World, Folk, Roots, and Traditional music pages

edit

Hi all. I think the pages for World music, Roots music, Folk music, and Traditional music need some changes. I've documented the ideas at Wikipedia:WikiProject World music/Definitions; if you could all respond on the talk page, that would be great!

Brought back as disambiguation page

edit

While editing the Root dab page, I found several entries that did not include the word "root" in their name, such as "American folk music". My guess was that they might be there because they're genres sometimes referred to as "roots music," although that was not called out anywhere on the page. So I decided to see if there was already a roots music entry -- and was surprised to find it was a redirect to "Root".

My feeling is that this is not optimal in either direction:

  • Someone coming to the "Root" page directly will not understand why "American folk music" is there, especially since "American folk music" is not a valid interpretation of the bare word "Root"
  • Someone typing in "roots music" will be somewhat surprised to come to the "Root" page -- even if we focus the redirect to the Music section -- as there is no indication which of these entries are associated with the phrase "roots music"

Or to put another way: "Roots music" does not ever mean just "root" that I can think of, so redirecting it there does not make sense.

The better solution is to not have roots music be a redirect. Since there are several pages that the term might refer to, one solution is to re-establish it as as a disambiguation page, which is what I've done. Hoping this is acceptable, NapoliRoma (talk) 02:29, 15 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
