Patriarchate "of the West"

Two things:

• The term "Roman Catholic Church" never existed in the first millennium, as far as we have records, to the best of my knowledge. It would be anachronistic to apply it to the Roman patriarchate during the time of the pentarchy.
• Similarly, "Patriarch of the West" was never a juridical entity. The pope is patriarch of the Latin Church, or patriarch of Rome for the Latins, or of the Roman Catholic Church - if you understand that to be synonymous with the Latin Church. The title "patriarch of the West" was used occasionally, as the Roman patriarchate was the only one "in the West", occasionally from the 7th century to the 19th, and only added as a regular title of the pope from 1863-2006.

So, i think we would be hard pressed to find any reference to the use of "Roman Catholic Church" to refer to the pre-schism patriarchate of Rome, and it certainly is inappropriate to refer to it as the "patriarchate of the west", in any case. Protoclete (talk) 08:52, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
