"I love women and sex"
editWhy has the quote where Martin states " I love women and sex. I am a real hot-blooded Puerto Rican, but I have never been attracted by sex with a man", been taken out of the article? This has happened during the past couple of days. __meco (talk) 15:37, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- It was removed here, without explanation.[1] The original link to a source went dead and was removed, so I presume that's why the quotations were removed too. I found a new source in case anyone wants to re-add the material. Will Beback talk 18:02, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- I think this is a part of the story that deserves to be relayed also, that he categorically denied any attraction to men earlier. He was obviously lying. Eventually, I'm sure he'll comment on why he did that, and then we should include that also. __meco (talk) 18:51, 31 March 2010 (UTC)

- {{cite news|title=He's finally livin' la vida liberated|first=Doug|last=Elfman|work=Las Vegas Review - Journal|date=March 30, 2010|page=A.3}}
- You can copy and paste that in. The source says:
- Back in the 2000 days of "Livin' la Vida Loca," he told Plus 7 Days magazine: "I love women and sex. I am a real hot-blooded Puerto Rican but have never been attracted by sex with a man." He flat-out told a newspaper, "I'm not gay."
- The fact that this paper has commented on it indicates a degree of interest in his conflicting statements. Will Beback talk 18:59, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- I agree, the statement should absolutely be included. As his "personal life" section reads now indicates that his being gay has only recenly come into question, which isn't the case. 207.237.230.164 (talk) 05:09, 3 April 2010 (UTC)
- I have re-added this initial quote, however the quote from the above unnamed newspaper, in the removing edit identified as the Sunday Express I did not reinstate since a search of the newspaper's website did not confirm this. __meco (talk) 06:53, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
- I am a little bit worried about the credibility of the original source, Plus 7 Days[2]. This is a Slovakian weekly tabloid publication which on Wikipedia is mentioned in the article on Slovakia's prime minister, Robert Fico, where it reads "As of March 2009 Fico has more than 10 pending libel lawsuits with a tabloid weekly Plus 7 Days alone." Even though Fico appears to be a litigious person, this should cause some concern if this is the only quote we can present of Martin actually denying his homosexuality. We should try and ascertain whether this publication satifies WP:RS. __meco (talk) 07:10, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

I think sourcing to a tabloid should be generally discouraged, but particularly in this case. That someone in the Las Vegas Review reprinted the tabloid claim does not make it more reasonable to include here as fact. I am removing the sentence pending some further clarity and more reliable sourcing on such a full-throated denial.
Part of the reason for this is that Martin is on record as having refused to confirm or deny questions of homosexuality in more than one instance, including a major Barbara Walters Special interview. Not only is it naive to suggest that denying homosexuality is a "conflicting statement" to a subsequent coming-out, or that life in the closet was "obviously lying", but it's editorially irresponsible on the surface of it to present the claim of a much-sued Slovakian tabloid (I mean, come on) that is reprinted in a minor publication that surely did not fact-check it and beyond that, it's editorially irresponsible to do so as if it were the sum and substance or the vast majority or the most significant response of his on the subject. Unlike other celebrities, who in coming out have made statements that they were never closeted amongst friends, Martin's coming-out statement inherently admits to having hidden this. His statement notes that his disclosure of this fact arose from his tackling the task of writing his autobiography; as such, as Meco notes, he will surely have some further, more nuanced comments, and when those are available, we can determine how best to acknowledge it. Sexuality is a bit more complex than the comments here bespeak, and societal norms and stigmas — particularly (ironically, perhaps) for entertainers — essentially require most people to be "lying" about their personal sexuality at one point or another, much less those who are gay. We're not talking about a member of the clergy defending himself on rape charges. We don't have articles about celebrities that belabor the fact that they claimed they were not unfaithful to their girlfriend or that they would love, honor and obey their spouse but were actually — gasp — lying, and do so by printing their alleged quotes as printed in tabloids.
It seems to me that the response of editors on this issue has less to do with the fact that the tabloid allegedly printed such words but on the fact that they were apparently presented in an earlier version of this article. Abrazame (talk) 06:32, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- We simply weren't aware of the tenuous nature of the source until I did some background checking yesterday. I think all who have taken part in this section so far simply reacted to something apparently compromising and apparently real being removed from the article without any explanation. Often supporters of various groups and individuals come onto Wikipedia and simply remove information about their icon (or blank out articles altogether) no matter how well referenced the contentious information in question may be. I think it's more or less a knee jerk reaction with many editors, myself included, to revert such changes on sight – in the confidence that if there were some valid reason for it, a second round would ensue and a cogent argument presented. I think we caught this one within a reasonable time frame this time around. It's more a concern that it was introduced in the first place without adequate sourcing. I wonder how Will Beback was able to track down the original reference from an offline source. __meco (talk) 07:38, 6 April 2010 (UTC)
- I found that in Proquest, an online newspaper archive. However I have no knowledge of the original source, Plus 7 Days, and if it's an unreliable source then it'd probably be best to leave out the disputed quotation. Will Beback talk 07:48, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

edit{{editsemiprotected}} Please change the passage that says Ricky Martin came out this year, to the true date he came out. He came out years ago. At least 10 I think. I remember my mum and me finding out about it, but I don't remember how.

A likely mistake in the "early life" section
editThe text says "Italian-Corsican origins". As far as I know, Corsica has been French since 1764 (purchased by Choiseul, Louis XV' Foreign Affairs minister, to the Republic ot Genova). 89.226.126.188 (talk) 22:31, 5 April 2010 (UTC)Jean Martin (not a cousin)
- So what's the error? That text implies that his grandfather was born on Corsica with some Italian heritage. the mere fact that Corsica is owned by France does not mean everyone there is of French heritage. That said, I'm not sure that Familytreemaker.genealogy.com is a reliable source. Will Beback talk 22:40, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Corsica was controlled by Republic of Genoa 1282-1768 when the french took control..most of the population if not all of them were of Italian origin. makes sense since it was controled for centuries by the italians. One of his distant grandfathers was born in Corsica, who was born only 30 years after the French took control..his last names were Negroni and Mattei.....the exact same thing can be said for Napoleon Bonaparte who was french speaking of italian descent. hence his italian name. It is relaiable since it is traced by someone who is part of the Negroni family in detail. It is possible that corsica is still mainly populated by french speakers of Italian ancestry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.177.48.76 (talk) 16:31, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Unnamed upcoming tour and autobiography, October 12, 2010
editIt says under tours that there's an "unnamed upcoming tour" in 2010. There is no source that confirms this, and as 2010 is almost over, maybe this information should be verified? Also, the article makes no mention of his autobiography, the English "Me" and the Spanish "Yo" which come out(came out?) this month. Can someone please add/change this information? Thanks. 99.88.87.212 (talk) 20:25, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
- Your first request shows why the second request is premature. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. Many things are planned or scheduled that never take place. This is the English Language version of Wikipedia. Adjust yourself to that fact or go somewhere else.
editWhy are English speakers always barraged by racists trying to insist that we use their language? Especially Spanish and Arabic. This is the English version of Wikipedia, and it should be written in English. Why do these racists always try to cram Spanish down our throats? Everyone in the world has a language. Yours is not better than mine. Personal attack, not improvement of this article This page is not nearly as bad as many others, but I am fed up with this practice. The leading paragraph of some topics is virtually unreadable because a translation has been added for almost every word.
In this article the leading paragraph provides the asinine translation found in this sentence: "He is the founder of Ricky Martín Foundation (in Spanish Fundación Ricky Martin), a non-profit charity organization." To begin with, personal attack person, who doesn't speak either language, could probably figure that out. There is no legitimate reason for this translation. And why the racial prejudice? Where is the Russian translation? What about German, Italian, French, Japanese, Chinese, etc? The logical conclusion of this absurdity will be that every word of the English article will be followed by its Spanish counterpart. Insanity! We don't vandalize their wiki; they should stop vandalizing ours.
I checked the Spanish-language wiki for this article, and it contains no translation into English. That is appropriate. This version should contain no translations into Spanish, unless the Spanish wiki is shut down completely. Then it would be acceptable to include a few pertinent translations. However, this instance is completely pointless.
Please remove this extraneous nonsense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.166.137.98 (talk) 02:58, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

- Please do not make attacks, call inferior something won't make superior other. The reason why Ricky Martin foundation Spanish transaltion is there is because it was first published in Spanish, if that would be promoted in Portuguese that would be in Portuguese (that's why the "racial prejudice"), if that would be released in English at first an Spanish transaltion would be unneeded. Since the original name is "Ricky Martin Foundation", there is no reason for the translation into Spanish. Fridek (talk) 14:42, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

His name
editIt seems that Martin is his middle name. So is he using his stage name as a double-barrelled first name or is the Martin intended to be his surname? If it's the former then the defaultsort should be changed and he should be listed under R.--Tuzapicabit (talk) 01:28, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
- First, in many Hispanic cultures the father's surname is followed by the mother's surname, but the latter is often omitted. Second, he is undoubtedly known as "Ricky Martin" so that is how we should refer to him regardless of what his birth name is. Will Beback talk 01:40, 3 February 2011 (UTC)
- Martin is his first surname. According to es.wiki he born Enrique José Martín Morales, so he should go by Martin, Ricky. Tbhotch* ۩ ۞ 01:39, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Please consider these edits
editIn the last paragraph of the first section it states Martin also co-owns a Miami restaurant, Casa Salsa, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2007. Martin did co-own Casa Salsa in 1999 but the restaurant has been closed since 2009. Maybe the sentence can be reworded to show past tense.
In the section Breakthrough it states He locally enjoyed seminal fame early on as a Paul Reiser impersonator. I have followed his career for years and I believe this is incorrect. And there was no reference for this statement. Could it please be removed?
In the section Crossover to English it states John Tesh taught Ricky Martin English in '98 and by '02 Martin was perfecting Tesh's English skills. I found the exact paragraph this sentence came from on two other websites, with no true reference. I also believe this to be false and would like it removed. Thank you. Link at the bottom to "honorific nicknames in popular music"??
editAt the bottom of the article there is a link to Honorific nicknames in popular music. I'm not sure (yet) why this is here. When I jump to that page and do a search for his name, it doesn't show in the other article.
Perhaps this link was added in advance of the edits on the other article? Or perhaps the entry for his name in the other article was removed sometime back?

If Ricky Martin Left Menudo in 1989...
editSince it is a fact that Ricky Martin had quit Menudo in July 1989, then that would have contradicted the practice of having Menudo members leave when they're 16 years old or develop signs of manhood (grow taller, voice deepens, grow facial hair, et al.) before said age (whatever comes first). In July 1989, Martin was still 17 years old (he would be 18 that December 24), so if you take into consideration the traditional rule that Menudo members leave at 16, he was over a year too late.
I re-iterate: considering the fact he was born in 1971, then that meant he had turned 16 in 1987, and thus would mean Menudo management would have dropped him from the group at that point. I wonder now if he had problems that extended his stay in Menudo up to July 1989? WikiPro1981X (talk) 10:37, 27 March 2013 (UTC)
Nationality
editJust reading the article, and as Ricky Martin apparently obtained Spanish citizenship, should he be referred to as "Puerto Rican-Spanish" in the first line of the article? I'm not quite sure how dual citizenship should be presented in articles. Cheers, The Giant Purple Platypus (talk) 06:26, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
- It would be especially tricky, considering there's no such thing as "Puerto Rican citizenship." As a native of Puerto Rico, he is a U.S. citizen, not a "Puerto Rican" one. --70.181.183.169 (talk) 05:45, 28 August 2015 (UTC)
Since he is in the Category:American gay actors and Category:American gay musicians, should he also be placed into the American categories, since Puerto Rico is technically part of the United States? Assessment Request
editThis article isn't a 'B' as it stands - there is still a lot of prose-smoothing to be done (Lede: "He has sold over 70 million albums sold ", "...hit, reaching number one in France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Finland, Italy, Turkey, and the entire continent of South America", "Martin went vegetarian in March 2013.") and an incredible amount of the content seems to rest on a single 'People Magazine' article citation. Additionally, there is clearly a certain "pro-Ricky" bias to the tone of the article. EBY (talk) 23:32, 6 June 2013 (UTC)

LGBT identification of public figure on first line
editHello Main Editors of Ricky Martin Wikipedia Entry,
In the spirit of National Coming Out Day, I am reviewing Wikipedia entries of LGBT public figures who have publicly come out to see if they are clearly identified as LGBT in their respective Wikipedia entry. I believe, for these individuals who have made many public statements in the media about their sexual orientation/gender identity, and for the benefit of young generations searching for LGBT role models, it is important to identify these public figures at the very beginning, just as we identify their nationality/ethnicity and profession.
I am not sure if the LGBT Wikimedians have ever discussed this or not in terms of making this a common practice. I would like to see it become a common practice, for sure.
Let me know what you think.

Please add Rebecca de Alba and Carlos Gonzalez to partners list
editI understand that both names are mentioned in the personal life section on Ricky Martin's page, however, both relationships were significant enough and long enough that they should be listed under his current partner's name, along with the dates the relationship ended. It's done on other pages. He was with Carlo for six years according to one interview with Ricky and he was with Rebecca for fifteen. Rebecca is a famous Mexican journalist and their relationship was extremely public. Since both his past relationships were significantly longer than this current one, and they were both significant parts of Ricky's history, it does not make sense to not make these past relationships more prominent. I'd make the change myself, but his page is locked. Naj1687 (talk) 10:57, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Also, his relationship with Alejandra Gunzman is very well known, and since she's also a celebrity, that should also be mentioned under his relationships. He's confirmed their past relationship as recently as 2010 in a televised interview on Univision that took place during the promotion of his book. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Naj1687 (talk • contribs) 16:18, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

We are talking about refrences in wikipedia
editIn writing articles, the most important things is refrences. Forbes is a really reliable & trustable refrence and clearly with no doubt has written 85 million albums sales! There is nothing for discussion! We cannot change the numbers based on what we think or based on a refrence that is for at least years ago and even not that much reliable!! You do not have the whole albums sales numbers. How are you saying that they have sold less than a billion? What refrence says that?? Nothing! There is actually no data about his last album sales! And even for older ones, all of the refrences are for many many years ago and not update and they don't include this decade sales and all countries. Really there is no data about it to decide!! So instead of using your own calculations and your own too incomplete data about his album sales, just read the forbes article that is really reliable. We can't change anything thay is accepted by a reliable refence because what we think. It is wikipedia, not a private article. We can't write our own idea. We must trust the refrences. If not nothing would be ok anymore in this article. Please do not discuss anymore about this really clear refrence and don't judge by yourself! آرمین هویدایی (talk) 08:26, 27 January 2019 (UTC)
- @آرمین هویدایی: Forbes can't say nothing about sales. They don't have an organization like Nielsen Soundscan that calculate sales in US. As I said, the certifications is the more accurate here, so as the peak in the charts around the world. Ricky Marin has only 30 million copies with certified sales, so you assumed that he has more 55 millions in countries that are little markets is not very precise. As everybody who has interest in charts, I said to you that the 70kk copies is more reliable, that means assume he has more 40 million sold that were not certified. Only one of his albums sold more than 10 million copies and almost all other sold less or around 1 million copies worldwide. I think we have to use the same criteria here, that we use in articles like Thriller (album), even though the media (even Forbes) says it sold 100kk or even 150kk around the world, 66 million copies is the more accurate, according to sources that are reliable: charts and certifications.--88marcus (talk) 05:10, 29 January 2019 (UTC)

--88marcus (talk) 05:10, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
- @88marcus: Your datas are not compelete. For example his last single "Fiebre" has sold more than 1 million copies in US, you can just visit RIAA official website and it is clearly written one million. It was just an example that shows your datas are incomplete even in the US!! But Forbes doesn't write its articles based on nothing! They must have a source that we don't know about it & everyone knows it is a reliable refrence. But when a reliable refrence such as Forbes says this, we can't use our dedications, nothing is impossible and so we can't say anything based on an incomplete datas and dedicate about other sales that we do not have any accssess to them! If at least you found a reliable refrence such as billboard or sth elese that is logical comparible with Forbes, then you can change it.
And... You can visit this link too, it is for 4 years ago and also has confirmed 80 million album sales. Are all these famous websites unreliable?! https://www.euronews.com/2015/03/23/ricky-martin-s-single-adios-propels-new-album-to-charts
Or a less reliable one: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20150219006635/en/Ricky-Martin-Joins-Simon-Cowell-Saban-Brands
85 million albums and the article is for 2015... https://www.axs.com/the-five-hottest-latin-artists-of-all-time-51672
85 millions again. Are not these refrences enough? What is your refrence? A huffingtonpost article which is for 8 years ago!? Is it really reliable or just because your information is too low about his sales you are trying to make us trust it?! Your datas are incomplete and you refrence for whole sales is not trustable and we must use reliable and update sources. So if you are trying to insist on what you are doing, first go and find a reliable complete and update refrence, but now your discussion is not acceptable. The refrences seem more accurate than your incomplete info. آرمین هویدایی (talk) 14:30, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
- Ricky Martin has not sold that many records in the past 10 years in order to justify the jump from 70 million records to 85 million records. As for those claims about 85 million albums, those are simply outrageously inflated. In fact, based on Ricky Martin's available certified sales, the 70 million records are inflated also.--Harout72 (talk) 15:06, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
- @آرمین هویدایی: We have another 40 million copies to cover what you said that is not completed! And there's a lot of sites that said he sold 70 million record too. You can search on google for yourself.--88marcus (talk) 16:43, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
- Even his record company says he sold 70 million records. link--88marcus (talk) 16:48, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
remove king of latin pop part.
editRemove King Of Latin Pop part its not accurate. No serious music publication magazine has has called him that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Annah777 (talk • contribs) 17:02, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
He has been called like that many times, Enrique Iglesias too, so the throne of King of Latin Pop belongs to both. Alberto279 (talk) 00:18, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
Discography section: Life album released in 2014 ??
editLife was released in 2005, not 2014 as it is stated in the discography section, that needs to be changed. Alberto279 (talk) 18:09, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
Menudo Discography included on main arcticle
editThe duscography of Menudo is shown in the main page of his discography, this should be changed and instead show another page that could directnor redirect you to the discography of Menudo as thise albums belong to the group, no to Ricky Martin as the sole artist. Alberto279 (talk) 00:55, 19 May 2019 (UTC)

Children of Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef
editThis article does talk about four children born to Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef, but does not mention whether the children were adopted or from a surrogate mother. I'm assuming it was the latter, but who would be the biological father? I'm assuming that is Ricky Martin, but I can only assume.
IMDB.com does mention two children born by a surrogate mother, with no mention of the biological father.
Wikipedia is keen to mention Cheryl Crow adopted two children, but just notes Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef has had four children. I am heterosexual but I respect gay people. I think it will show more respect to give a little more information on how they can have children. Otherwise, many people will assume they adopted the four children, which is probably not true. Again, I can only assume or refer to IMDB.com. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dkf12 (talk • contribs) 17:52, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

- True, IMDB is not a reliable source, but this post should be better. Reading this post, one will get the impression that Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef have adopted their children. IMDB does give more clarity on two of the children. Dkf12 (talk) 18:51, 29 March 2020 (UTC)
- When I first read this post and Ricky Martin's and Jwan Yosef's four children, I asked "How?" Believe me, I am not the only one. I originally assumed they adopted their children, but ironically it was IMDB that proved me wrong on at least two of the children. Dkf12 (talk) 19:48, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

- This post mentions the birth of Ricky Marin's and Jwan Josef's fourth child, but Ricky Martin did have twins born in 2008 and first dated Jwan Yosef in 2016. Daily Mail had an article on September 29, 2019, and stated Ricky Martin, father of three, and husband Jwan Yosef revealed they are expecting a baby via a surrogate, which provides clarity. Dkf12 (talk) 19:46, 31 March 2020 (UTC)
Ricky Martin has 4 children, all ot them via surrogate mother, non adpoted. His twins, Matteo & Valentino (2008) have Ricky as a single parent. But Lucia (2018) & Renn (2019) are Ricky & Jwan's children together. If you need reliable sources I will give you. آرمین هویدایی (talk) 15:54, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
