He was diagnosed quite early on then - autism having been recognised not long before - and interestingly had additional physical problems - the cataracts. In the absence of his medical records or a more detailed diagnosis, it is still worth considering whether he had a constellation of conditions including or producing autism by a mechanism unlike most. Interesting comment. Richard was not diagnosed as autistic when he was three (in 1955) but 'severely mentally retarded', probably one of the few diagnoses available at the time. My recollection of Richard first being described as autistic was in the late 1970's. He undoubtedly displayed many autistic characteristics, though in other respects, he was not typically autistic. He was extremely sociable and really enjoyed the company of people and did his best to interact with them despite his communication challenges. He always made good eye contact and had a highly developed sense of humour and love of dancing - both unusual in an autistic person, perhaps highly so.
