More constructively, this article lacks sufficient in-line citations and references. Many links to other Wikipedia articles exist. However, these are not considered as external sources. For example, there isn't any reference to the "bicycle drawing." I suggest an alumnus with research writing skills clean this up. Janetmanning (talk) 16:01, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Sports

is all this true???

Because of its nature as an art school, sports are not the focus of campus life, but do provide a rare sense of school spirit. RISD does have several intramural sports teams including a basketball team named the "Balls," who have the slogan, "When the heat is on, the Balls stick together." The team with the most infamous name is the hockey team, which proudly carries the title: "Nads." The customary cheer at hockey games is go Nads! (deliberately sounding like gonads). The RISD mascot is "Scrotie", a giant penis.

I went to the school and I can say it's true, however I don't have any hard core citable references beyond the RISD Jolt page and the basketball site listed on the main article page. Here are some pictures on the jolt though for proof of team names and scrotie.

Also here is an article I found very quickly that mentions the chant in big black bold letters on the right side

Substance?

Does anyone have anything to say about the actual program, campus life, etc.? Let's say I'm looking at schools and I want to know something more than the school's team names. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Juicifer451 (talk • contribs) 14 August 2006r This school will not prepare you for the real world. I went to RISD for a year on a scholarship and it was the biggest waste of my time. The teachers were so bias and opinionated. There was this one drawing teacher that hits on every girls in the class daily. My design teacher would be making out with her girlfriend every now and then, There were no sports and no general studies. I would bet half the kids there can't balance their check book. The one thing I did liked was there were many friendly and attractive girls.

US News has never ranked art schools. Where does this statistic come from? Evolve17 01:29, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

To the contrary, U.S. News does rank graduate fine arts programs. In particular, they rank schools by their Master of Fine Arts programs.

Booterism in lead

I chopped out a big chunk of boosterism from the lead because it was POV, uncited, and ultimately unverifiable. Citing statistics like low admissions rates are not actually an indication of quality, just an measurement of interest and should not be used to support claims of quality. The page as a whole could use a good deal of work (splitting off the alumni list into a separate article might be a good start) and I would recommend visiting WP:UNI for templates and advice. Removed the "19% admissions rate" statistic because it was unverified. I hate to see my school, which already gets a lot of flack for its elitism, rely on unverified claims to build itself up. Though I have heard our admissions rate is one of the lowest among US art schools—supposed 30% in my graduating year—I'd like to see some proof of that before I see it inserted here. 72.195.132.62 (talk) 03:17, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Much of the writing in this appears to be cribbed from some sort of "101 Best Colleges" guide. See sentences like "Students will always, always complain about school food because anyone eating the same thing every day for every meal is bound to get sick of it" and "When it comes to the facility that students care about most—studio space—it’s on a department-by-department basis, but on the whole, people’s needs are met one way or another and most everyone has what they need to function." Home test? Bicycle? Infamous…?

Applicants to RISD are required to complete RISD's infamous two-drawing "hometest", one of which involves the trademark RISD bicycle drawing. Surely whoever wrote this realizes that it requires expansion and explanation? The word “infamous”, which is unencyclopædic, apart, if the test is worth mentioning, it’s worth describing what is involved, what part it plays in the application, how it is marked etc. Also, is the "trademark" test actually trade-marked, and what is the bicycle which is drawn?
