The result of the move request was: Moved  — Amakuru (talk) 08:54, 16 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

– Title 'Republic of Afghanistan' is ambiguous. Can not get why the DAB page which I created (Republic of Afghanistan (disambiguation)) was moved. Heanor (talk) 21:20, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Courtesy Ping Rublov who queried the move. Cheers Megan B.... It’s all coming to me till the end of time 21:27, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
...and courtesy ping to Fourthords who questioned the move at WT:RM in the first place. Note that as best as I can discern, this RM uses the proper dash (en, not em), unlike the original move. Rublov (talk) 22:11, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
A dash is not so important (it could be fixed later). I'm wondering if there are any substantial objections. I saw that the dash was not correct, but I assumed that there were no essential objections. --Heanor (talk) 22:19, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Weak oppose as we have no other article titled "Republic of Afghanistan" so disambiguation is not necessary. Confusion with Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is possible, but better resolved by more descriptive hatnotes. Rublov (talk) 22:25, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Changing my vote to Neutral. I think that disambiguation through hatnotes is still a better solution, but this is adequate, too. Rublov (talk) 15:46, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • My initial objection was because I thought that the movement of an national-level article probably warranted some discussion in the first place (and to the improper dash used). As for the propriety of disambiguation in this particular case, I lean towards not disambiguating unless there were more than one article/state specifically titled Republic of Afghanistan. — Fourthords | =Λ= | 23:16, 1 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
user:fourthords, as you know the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan renamed the Republic of Afghanistan in 1986. And there was also the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan which has 5 times more views. --Heanor (talk) 09:53, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Don't assume what I know. If you want "Democratic Republic of Afghanistan" and "Islamic Republic of Afghanistan" moved to new titles, then those discussions would be held at Talk:Democratic Republic of Afghanistan and Talk:Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. As of now, only this article is titled "Republic of Afghanistan", and any potential confusion can be handled by a hatnote such as {{distinguish}}. (By the way, you don't need to type my username or link to my userpage when replying. You can just indent with a colon under the text to which you're replying—see WP:THREAD and MOS:LISTGAP for examples.) — Fourthords | =Λ= | 14:03, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • For what it's worth, I've now notified WikiProject Afghanistan of this discussion. — Fourthords | =Λ= | 14:03, 2 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • @Fourthords and Rublov: you are right that we have now no other article titled "Republic of Afghanistan", but from 1987 till 1992 Afghanistan had a full name 'Republic of Afghanistan'. Also data from pageviews shows that following WP:DETERMINEPRIMARY Republic of Afghanistan (1973–1978) is not the primary topic for the title 'Republic of Afghanistan'. --Heanor (talk) 17:25, 3 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
WP:DETERMINEPRIMARY is about determining the primary topic for a word, name, or phrase [that] may refer to more than one topic. It does not apply here because "Republic of Afghanistan" only refers to one topic, the subject of this article. "Democratic Republic of Afghanistan" and "Islamic Republic of Afghanistan" are different phrases, just as "Roman Empire" is a different phrase from "Holy Roman Empire". In my opinion, any possible ambiguity is best resolved by improving the hatnotes, not by a longer and more unwieldy article title that will be harder to link to. Rublov (talk) 22:29, 3 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Support per nom. "No other article titled X" is not the criteria for disambiguation. It is WP:D2D: Disambiguation is required whenever, [...], there is more than one existing Wikipedia article to which that word or phrase might be expected to lead, emphasis mine. As demonstrated by the nominator, this title could as plausibly lead to the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Further, the current title fails WP:RECOGNIZABLE – after all the turbulent history of the country, I doubt that even those better versed in history would know the exact official names. No such user (talk) 14:38, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Disambiguation is already provided: the two titles are disambiguated by the presence or absence of the words "Democratic" and "Islamic". This is a common way to disambiguate country names: see Republic of the Congo and Democratic Republic of the Congo, or Czech Republic and Czech Socialist Republic. The question is whether further disambiguation is required. What needs to be demonstrated is that the state that existed between 1973 and 1978 is not the sole primary topic for the term "Republic of Afghanistan". I'm willing to be convinced that it is not (hence my weak oppose), but so far no one has. Further, this move would have the major disadvantage of making it much harder to link to Republic of Afghanistan.
I doubt that even those better versed in history would know the exact official names — but you do think they would know the exact years that the Republic of Afghanistan existed? Rublov (talk) 15:26, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Struck point not worth arguing over. Rublov (talk) 15:50, 5 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • @Rublov: but from 1987 till 1992 Afghanistan also had a full name 'Republic of Afghanistan'! Not Democratic ... or Islamic .... --Heanor (talk) 15:30, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
so far no one has I provided link to pageviews count above. Also you can see scholars.google.com results. --Heanor (talk) 15:32, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's fair enough. I've changed my vote to neutral. Rublov (talk) 15:47, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • I would weakly support this. Even if there was not multiple time periods referred to formally as "Republic of Afghanistan", "Republic of X" is a vague enough term that it might be used to find any modern country, or any iteration of a longer name with that phrase within it. CMD (talk) 17:27, 4 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. There is no evidence that this article, one of three matches in the DAB, is the primary topic and it seems unlikely. It's even possible that at least one of the other mentions there is also a valid destination for Republic of Afghanistan. The DAB should not have been moved. Emblem on Flag edit

Is it possible someone can change the emblem on the flag and put it back to how it was? The last version was far far more accurate. The one without the bird having a mouth 94.173.80.164 (talk) 11:12, 30 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
