Actually the UNIVAC 60 and 120 used "cold-cathode" (no heater filament) gas filled storage tubes, not vacuum tubes. In fact, you could open a panel and read the storage contents by noting the bluish-purple glowing tubes. I recall servicing them on a couple occasions although I was never formally trained on them. An early "Field Change" performed on them was the installation of four vertically arranged fluorescent tubes inside the cabinet. The fluorescent light helped or enhanced the storage tube's ionization threshold. Woodym1 (talk) 23:52, 5 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
