Would anyone mind if we made an article entitled "Eastern Orthodoxy in South Africa"? Kostantino888Z (talk) 00:50, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Forced conversion

What's the evidence for the following statement:" During apartheid there was sustained persecution of African Traditional Religion and forced conversions during that era"? Now don't tell me the book is the evidence. We need testable examples, when such a statement is in the article. --41.151.231.146 (talk) 12:50, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Please point to the section in that book which gives information in this regard. This is at best an exaggeration and most likely untrue. (Opinion: a) Stating untruths about the evils of Apartheid is pointless. b) Also, if this is in any way true, it requires a whole section by itself.

I have asked the editor of the book Richard Elphick to take a look at this statement GramlerGrindstone (talk) 13:26, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

The editor of the cited book responded with similar sentiment on that above statement. He undertook to take a look. Again, if this is true, there needs to be a section that expands on this. A single controversial statement with a dubious reference is not good enough GramlerGrindstone (talk) 14:13, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Unexplained revert

I have made a number of changes and explained each of them. If anyone disagrees with my edits, please discuss it here instead of reverting without explanation. HelenOnline 09:15, 14 December 2014 (UTC)

Andreas has a tendency to do editing/reverting without consulting. I've done some editing myself on the tables, but, I think one item that should probably be covered more is religion under Apartheid (notably some churches split). Also include the data for the different groups within South Africa. Might be interesting to know the story of why nearly 12,000 Blacks consider themselves Jews (as of 2001 census). In addition the body of the article claims 15% follow African Traditional religions which isn't supported by the census data though things may have changed significantly between 2001 and 2014 (or people are combining African Traditional religions with another religion). --Erp (talk) 02:13, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Erp. HelenOnline 06:50, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
I didn't really change much, I just wanted to re-add the graphs. Although it isn't very new data, it is the most recent and it's just easier to find out basic religious data when looking in a graph rather than having to scroll down and read the often complex tables. First the info in the chart isn't referenced. Where is it from? Second you have a practice of renaming categories to the point of confusion (e.g., Evangelical Lutheranism is not the same as Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland in the Religion in Iceland article); I doubt your source lists 'irreligion' as a category. Third I would break out the major Christian categories (e.g., Mainline Protestant [Anglican, Methodist, Lutheran, Baptist, Dutch Reform], Catholic, Zion, Apostolic, other) if possible and if supported by a source since that would give readers a better idea of the diversity within Christianity in South Africa Erp (talk) 22:19, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

Copied sections from other pages

A few months ago I added the section "Individual Religions." All the text was taken from the articles that are linked to by "Main article:________" (i.e. from Hinduism in South Africa) and wasn't my own writing. I then modified the text a bit to make it make sense as stand-alone paragraphs. Just mentioning this because now Wikipedia has a policy about retroactively acknowledging all the text I borrowed.
