Inconsistent Genre

edit

In the world of video games, the terms "Adventure" and "Console RPG" are not synonomous. These are two distinct video game genres with very different gameplay. For instance, Adventure games rarely involve any kind of character stats or gaining levels. In the purest sense of the term, Console RPG refers to a specific sub-genre of RPG that originated in Japan, primarily for consoles. One of the defining gameplay characteristics of the majority of console RPG's is grinding: purposely reexploring one particular area of the game for the sole purpose of gaining experience without advancing the game plot.

The Myst series is an example of Adventure games. The Dragon Quest series and Final Fantasy series are defining examples of Console RPG's. The Legend of Zelda is an example of an action-adventure game, a separate genre that tries to blend Adventure games with mild RPG elements.
