French wiki says it - the Rappenkrieg in Basel - was caused by the introduction of a new tax on wine and meat. As far as I can make out German wiki says it was down to an increase in an (by implication pre-existing) sales tax on wine. For translation purposes I've gone with the German version, but the sourcing is minimal and imprecise, neither entry sourcing line by line. French gives this one para web-link [1] and German wiki gives a book published, it says, in 1833. If anyone can access a good source feel free to improve my acceptance of German wiki's version!
