This article should probably get renamed edit

There are a couple of real topics in this article:

  • 3D imaging After a brief search, so far this appears to be the only Wikipedia article that gives a full overview of 3D imaging methods
  • The format that 3D images are sometimes stored in or converted into. (also the initial raw, usually initially distorted form that many of these methods produce) In essence coding depth information into a 2D image. The common names for this are depth map or z-map. There is little or no coverage of this topic in the article.

I believe that that term "range imaging" is seldom or never used. It appears to have zero usage in any of the provided references. A Google search on the term basically just turned up this article and mirrors of it.

I think that all of the above points to renaming this article to 3D imaging.

3D imaging is a redirect to 3D reconstruction which covers (only) some of the methods. North8000 (talk) 02:59, 11 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@North8000: Cameras that produce depth maps are also known as "depth cameras," but there are also many sources that use the term "range imaging." "Range imaging" is a more ambiguous term, since it can also refer to high dynamic range imaging. Jarble (talk) 14:26, 10 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Range imaging3D imaging – Described in detail on article talk page. Briefly, a good and needed article that is badly mis-named. None of the sources use the current name, many many of them use the new name. North8000 (talk) 19:30, 15 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@North8000: 3D imaging currently redirects to "3D reconstruction" instead of "range imaging," since there are other methods for 3D imaging that do not rely on RGB-D cameras, such as tomographic reconstruction. Jarble (talk) 17:48, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Jarble: I'm not sure that I understand your point and I'm not sure that you understand what I'm proposing which is to rename this article to 3D imaging. How do you think it should be? Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 18:35, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@North8000: I'm not sure if "3D imaging" is a good title for this article. It's somewhat more vague than the original title, since it often refers to other methods for 3D reconstruction that do not require depth sensors, such as tomographic reconstruction. Jarble (talk) 18:59, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Jarble:Before discussing further it's still not clear what you feel is best. Are you saying that it's best to keep the current name ("Range imaging") for this article? North8000 (talk) 21:13, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@North8000: The current title is probably better. There are many thousands of articles on Google Scholar about range imaging technology, so it should be easy to find references for this article. Jarble (talk) 21:20, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Jarble: Well, about 1/2 of those were the search extracting "range imaging" from "high dynamic range imaging" but the other half were on range imaging.North8000 (talk) 21:40, 16 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Jarble: and all: My renaming idea would, amongst other things, call for no longer having an article for Range imaging. If there arguments for continuing to have an article by that name then I no longer wish to pursue my idea, and withdraw it. (once I figure out the correct way to do that). If I pursue some portion of my idea any further, it would be to build 3D imaging into an article vs. the redirect that it currently is. North8000 (talk) 15:51, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@North8000: As I already explained here: "3D imaging" is a more ambiguous title than "range imaging," since it often refers to other methods for 3D reconstruction that are not based on RGB-D cameras. The article's title shouldn't be changed unless we can find a less-ambiguous title for it. Jarble (talk) 16:23, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Jarble: Maybe you missed my previous post. I withdrew my idea of renaming this article. North8000 (talk) 17:21, 17 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
