Ramskapelle was, for the Belgians at least, the pivot around which the First Battle of the Yser was fought in October 1914. The mixed-up remnants of the Belgian Army, who had fought a long running retreat from Namur to the coast, turned and fought on the railway line between Nieupoort and Ypres: the heart of the battle appears to have been around Ramskapelle. When the remaining forces were on the point of breaking, the Belgian King ordered the sea-sluices at Nieupoort to be flooded, making the land between there and Ypres unpassable: the Germans were forced to turn East, running into the British and French forces at Ypres, and the first large battle of the WWI began.
