Claims edit

Ralph Hamor was on the Sea Venture and was wrecked on Bermuda. He would have arrived in Jamestown in May 1610 aboard either the Patience or the Deliverance. This he states in his book A True Discourse on the Present State of Virginia, London 1615. Page 6 here: https://archive.org/stream/truediscourseofp1957hamo#page/n5/mode/2up

The article seems to suggest he was a sea captain, he wasn't. He was made a [militia?] captain by Gates after they arrived in Virginia.

  • The article needs some serious cleaning for verification. One of the claims I just removed was that Christopher Newport died in 1621 after an attack, but this isn't the case. He died in 1617 in Java and it's not quite clear what he died of. The Encyclopedia Virginia (a very reliable source) doesn't have it listed. It might have been battle, but then that'd probably have been mentioned. However if they got the date of his death wrong I have to question what else they got wrong. I'll start cleaning this up with the EV's biography of Hamor. If it's not mentioned or seems particularly wrong, I'll remove it until it can be verified with a good RS. I'm also not happy that the article relies on RootsWeb, which accepts user submitted content and has no true verification process as far as I know. Tokyogirl79LVA (talk) 14:43, 4 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
