-Border, not sacred-

The element Pyhä- does mean "sacred", but in this context it means "border". As ancient borders were considered sacred, they were named so. This hypothethis is prevalent within finnish linguologists, and as a culture anthropolgist myself I don't consider Kalevala RS, since it's mostly written by E. Lönnrot based on tales he collected and is NOT a collection of ancient poems, as it is often misinterpreted. One source for this meaning of word pyhä is unofficial history of Pyhäjärvi, Pitelijöitä ja papinheittäjiä, edited by Matti Korhonen (only finnish version available).
