Oldest?

The oldest member of the platoon

Is he? I know the show isn't always consistent on comparitively obscure details, but the first season episode The Showing Up of Corporal Jones is pretty explicit that Jones is the eldest (as the only one deemed too old) - was there ever anything that explicitly says Godfrey is? Godfrey is nearly 86. Jones' is in his 70s and his father is in his 90s.

86?

At that age he would have been born in the late 1850's! Making him in his fifties during WWI and therefore not subject to conscription - and probably not permitted to serve in action in any way. I was just watching the episode The Recruit and already wondering about his age and previous experiences. However the main article Dad's Army says he's 59 - which would then tally with his RAMC work and all Plutonium27 (talk) 20:34, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Well, there are several inconsistencies like that throughout the series - in the early episodes, Jones supposedly has a living father, for example. I'll have to have a read around to see if his age is explicitly stated in any books, etc. Bob talk 20:37, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

As mentioned above in The Showing Up of Corporal Jones the key plot point is that Jones is too old for the platoon as he's aged 70 (the limit for membership) and this is the only technical fault that Regan can find. As Regan is generally not impressed with the platoon it's clear that anyone else aged 70 or over would also have been shown up. Frazer and Godfrey are regularly mentioned as the other two of the three oldest but this (and Jones being the only one old enough to remember Mainwaring's father's shop) is about the only time any particular age is given. Homosexual?

It's implied in the earlier episodes that Godfrey is homosexual. Should this be mentioned?

I don't think it's been noted by many, certainly not on the scale of "Pike is Wilson's son but we don't say it outright" is. In fact what are the implications given? Timrollpickering (talk) 08:56, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

I can't remember it ever being implied. Indeed in the episode All is Safely Gathered In it is more than implied that he had a relationship with the farmers daughter whose farm the platoon works on to bring in the harvest. Maybe not a sexual relationship given the period setting but it is suggested by Jones that Godfrey wanted it to be.i 82.219.62.53 (talk) 12:34, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Tags against other Dad's Army Characters

It's a pity that all the articles are spoilt by tags asking for citations. I have done Godfrey and may be able to fix some of the others, but it would be good it we can all pitch in (like a well-oiled machine) and get these tags removed. Mikeo1938 (talk) 17:01, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Charles Godfrey

Charles Godfrey (1851-1900) was a very popular music hall entertainer in the 1880s and 1890s, whose name could well have been known to Ridley, Perry and Croft. Are there any sources that acknowledge that is the origin of the character's name? I've added it (perhaps cheekily) as a "see also", but it could be added into the article if there are reliable sources. Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:49, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
