Help needed with Eastbourne

I am trying to gather a small group of people to improve the Eastbourne article and writing to you as you have edited that page recently. I have set up a what needs to be done section on the talk page, and I am hoping that I will get a few people to start a discussion. It would be wonderful if you could spare a few minutes just to look at the current Eastbourne article and give your opinion. You can create your own Sandbox just by referring to a subdirectory of your user page. I have put a link on your personal user page. Click on this and it will create your own personal sandbox that does not get deleted.

To remove the stub indicator, just delete the {{France-mil-bio-stub}} tag that you will see when you are editing.

You have two choices when replying to a message. First, you can reply by editing your own talk page. Most users would watch the page, waiting for a reply. The second option is to reply on the persons talk page, which you can normally find by clicking on their name. Make sure you go to their talk page before adding a new section by clicking the + sign.

I think the first option is best, as it allows a conversation. You may also consider putting a message on the article talk page, in my case Talk:Eastbourne. It depends if you wanted to make a personal comment to me, or comments about the Eastbourne article.

There are different methods of creating references, some articles just list them as normal text. Others, like Eastbourne, use the <REF>...</REF> mark up. You only see them when you go into edit. Basically, the <REF> goes where the facts are. At the bottom of the page you will see </REFERENCE>, indicating where all the references are to be listed. If you are not sure what to do, put the reference in brackets, or leave details on the talk page. Other editors will gladly assist with the tidying up.

But there's something which I don't follow about using a template to create a Harvard reference.

If you look below you'll see what I tried to do as an experiment. However, when I save it, it just comes out as a series of brackets followed by Last Year and more brackets.

I can see where you are getting confused. You need to keep the parameter name in the template, setting it equal to your data. Surname=Ockenden not Ockenden= I have corrected the first one so you can see the difference. MortimerCat 13:24, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

OK VMT for sorting that out for me. I've looked at the articles for Bexhill, Brighton and Hastings. I see what you mean about the lack of references on our page. I have some books and will be able to trace a lot of the historical stuff. However, what are we to do when we create a sentence or paragraph which has been rewritten to form an amalgam of pieces of information from various publications? We can't refer to all of them in the one reference. I mean, references need not be straight quotes, surely.

In places, the existing article looks like something from a town guide.

Good question. Some articles seem to source every fact, Chew Valley for example. Others just list the reference books used, Cleeve Abbey for example. I do not know the answer nor could I find an answer. Personally, if a source was used throughout the article, I would just quote the name in the reference section. If I just extracted a single fact or two, then I would link the fact to a footnote. MortimerCat 22:34, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

OK ... thanks for the comments. I'm getting the hang of it but have a problem. If you look in my new personal sandbox, you'll that at the end I've done a draft of the E'bne article. I tried to insert two references into the para about WW2. However, the Harvard refs have appeared within the paragraph instead of coming up with a numbered footnote reference at the end. What has gone wrong?

To make a footnote, you have to put the Harvard reference inside <REF>...</REF>. I also changed the ID parameter to ISBN. Although ID is correct, using ISBN I think makes it clearer to the reader. MortimerCat 23:16, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Also realise that, whereas I can read the list of references on the article page itself (Gunnell etc), I can't see them in the edit box or when I copy and paste the HTML text from the edit box into a Word document. Where are they and why can't I see them?

Are you looking in the right place? Although the article page shows the references to be in the reference paragraph, when you are in edit, you will find the reference template next to the appropriate fact. The ones already on the Eastbourne page are slightly different to the Harvard ones. They use {{cite journal}} MortimerCat 23:23, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

As I have just done an edit on a section of the Eastbourne article, it occured to me that if you are editing in a sandbox, there is a danger you may revert my changes. Your sandbox version was copied before my edit. I apologise if you had already realised this, but you always need to be aware that other people can make changes whilst you are working elsewhere. Thanks for the update and comments. I merged your duplicated reference into a single one. This is done by calling the reference a name <REF NAME=WRIGHT>.....</REF>. I normally use the authors surname, but it has to be unique in the article. Then whenever you quote the same reference again all you need is <REF NAME=WRIGHT/>. Blue plaque article & multiple references

I would suggest that one reference will suffice if it says "Various issues".

Just so we do not duplicate our edits, I about to revamp the Districts section to the official Wards. I was wondering, do you live in Eastbourne. I was assuming you do, but then I saw the 3:41am edits!

Change of plan, I am going to work on politics. As the wards will be mentioned here, I had second thoughts about using them in the District section. I think the districts should be places such as Hampden Park, Shinewater, Roselands. Ones that Eastbourne residents refer to. However, I do not know where to obtain a complete list. Ich möchte Dich daher bitten, sich irgendwann um folgende Artikel im Englischen zu kümmern:

Citation tidy up

Glad to see you are still watching Eastbourne. I thought I would attempt a FA status, and get a Gold star. I am sure its achievable. The only possible problem might be its size, we may have to create separate articles such as History of Eastbourne. I put in a request for a peer review, it will be interesting to see what they say.

There is a problem in that the Eastbourne article is using three styles of citation template {{Harvard}}, {{Cite xxx}} and {{Citation}} . The rules say use any, but be consistent. So I am now in the middle of converting them all to {{Citation}} as that seemed to be the most common, it is now! Additionally, the Harvard template seems to be displaying some strange results which is probably what you were seeing. MortimerCat (talk) 01:14, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm no techie so can't explain with any precision. However the clr template clears the formatting and, in this case, caused the reference paragraph to appear below the picture rather than to its right. In other words it was only cosmetic. Anyone can remove the tags, so I removed them. (For the avoidance of doubt, it is better to do as you did and ask a disinterested party to remove them.) I also started a "References" section where all publications should be listed that are used as footnotes. The information regarding this is scattered around in various guidelines and polices, including WP:LAYOUT, WP:CITE, WP:FN (which includes how to use "named references" so that you can repeat a reference etc. Hope this helps! Education of craftpersons in Germany

Thank you :) I think the German way of Educating crafts persons is quite unique nowadays :). People who hear that only a small percentage of Germans has a college education often wrongly assume that we are an uneducated people, so I thought that might be interesting for them hearing about our Education of craftspeople that has a very long tradition. I will go on with the article in a few days, but have to do some research first. By the way I wanted to thank you and everybody else, who corrected my spelling. Some things (such as discussion of the comprehensive system versus the tripartite system of Education are mentioned several times (for example in Education in Germany, Gymnasium (Germany), Realschule and so on... How do you think about this. Bordeaux pictures

Hello, I found nothing about Paul Reynaud. But Le Chapon Fin still exists. It was raining, and there were many cars parked on the sloping ground, so the shot is not exceptional. Moreover, there is a board with the name of a doctor, I guess it should be removed before the photo might be uploaded on commons. How can I send it to you ? I've also done some quick searchs at Mollat, but it was not easy to found something a specific information among these huge books about Bordeaux. Thanks a lot. I think that kind of specific information would be contained in a locally published book about the history of the city. As you say, it's unlikely that the tourist bureau will know. It would be good if you were able to help but don't go to too much trouble. (BTW, I was wondering about your "I'm not used with (to) the new skin" but guess you mean "faire peau neuve". My dictionary gives three translations: "to adopt a new image" (as of a political party); "to change one's clothes"; "to turn over a new leaf". Do you mean one of these? I would like to thank you for your useful contribution on the english-speaking article about Marine Le Pen (copy edits and improvement with reliable sources in english). Since I am not a native speaker of English, it is sometimes difficult to find the most appropriates words and sentences.

About Marine Le Pen, the most important informations are about her economical and social programme (opposed to the liberalism of UMP) and local politics in Hénin-Beaumont (former communist and socialist voters choose more frequently the National Front at local and national level).

I think that it is untimely to write actually about the 2012 presidential election. In order to take part within 18 months in the presidential election, Marine Le Pen must absolutely become the next leader of the National Front. Like you know, her competitor is Bruno Gollnisch MEP. The FN Congress will be held in Tours on 15 and 16 January 2011. According to two polls, Marine Le Pen would arrive in third position polling 14% in the 2012 presidential election. Political analysts don't exclude that she would take part in the run-off of the 2012 presidential election (like Jean-Marie Le Pen on 21 April 2002). Marine Le Pen appears more frequently in the French media than Bruno Gollnisch. According to the political observers, she seems more charismatic than him. My translation of Elettra

Hello discospinster and thanks for your comment. But there is a note with the Italian article requesting a translation. And that is what I am trying to do. However, I'm not creating an article from scratch. I am merely translating the article that appears in the Italian Wiki. This is the request ... Wikipedia is requesting a translation.

It is one thing to translate an article but quite another to find citations. Are you saying that my translation will not be accepted unless I find citations? There may be some citations in the Italian article (cannot remember just at the moment) and if there are, I will, of course, include them.

I am happy for my work to be held in draft form until my translation is complete - but at that point I would like it to be published. My translation will be a total waste of time if it is denied publication because of a lack of citations.

Elettra ship 1904

Thanks for the notification regarding the possible deletion of above article. However, I think there has been some confusion. The article on the ship is no longer a draft but appears as a full-blown article. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elettra_(ship_1904)
