Talk:Prince Albert, Saskatchewan

City Picture edit

The city of Prince Albert has a much more beautiful skyline that what is depicted in the photo. Please can someone photograph the city and replance the one we have now. As of now we look like a small prarie town, not a city. —Preceding unsigned comment added by KermitCrack (talkcontribs) 00:36, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Next 100 years edit

Time for some discussion about Prince Albert.

Considering the history of the last 100 years, what is in store for this City and inhabitants over the next 100?

There is some questionable stuff on this page (particularly the mentions of small non-notable bands from PA who only played one gig "to a small audience"), but some of the silly-sounding stuff has a folksy quality to it that adds colour to the page (I particularly like the bit about the local high school that performs gothic romances and light-hearted kids shows).

We have to remember that if we are to delete much of the information that we have deemed "questionable" then P.A. starts to look like the typical dull prairie city. Until we are able to add more cultural statements on the city, these will have to do. As long as it is to do with Prince Albert, in my mind it has legitimacy.

edit: what PA looks like as a result of the editing process is not important so long as a factual representation is put forth. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a promotional tool. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 132.208.29.5 (talk) 06:41, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Local Linguistics edit

I resided in Prince Albert for some time and do not accept the authors contention that these expressions are unique to Prince Albert, particularly "cuz" which I believe is a common informal expression used by Metis people. Some of the other expressions I have never encountered before and I think evidence should be provided for their uniqueness and pervasiveness in the city or this section should be removed immediately. Wyldkat

False Distinction edit

Prince Albert is not the northernmost city in Saskatchewan. At latitude 53°17' north Lloydminster is. Realistically millions more Canadians have travelled through Lloyd. given the Yellowhead and relatively closeness to Edmonton, not to mention proximity to the soon-to-be twinned Highway 63 in Alberta that heads up to Fort Mac with junctions into SK. La Loche will be a 4.5 hour car ride to Edmonton, which is significant given that the road on the Saskatchewan side is gravel.

Problems with the city edit

In order to be unbiassed and tell the whole story, it may be worth noting somewhere on the page that many Saskatchewan residents, including people from Prince Albert, consider it an undesireable place to live. Racial tensions, segregration, high crime rates, etc. could be discussed along with the demise of local businesses since the introduction of big box retailers in the town. The obesity epidemic may also be worth noting.

As a resident of Prince Albert, I do not see it as an undesirable place to live. The problems mentioned earlier are evident in many cities across Canada, and shouldn't be relegated specifically to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Yes, local business are suffering due to big box retailers, but the same thing is happening everywhere.

If anything, it should be specially noted that the Indigenous Peoples residing in and around Prince Albert are making headway in regards to self-government and their justice systems. Racism is not as evident in this city as in others, as many native and non-native people have learned to live with each other in harmony. Prince Albert is the only place where I've seen native people employed in a variety of jobs and working with the public. It is something you don't find anywhere else, and should be applauded.

Well, Prince Albert does have a big base of Native people and so we try to put in jobs off all sorts. Mr. C.C. 17:04, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree with the first entry here under problems. Racism is an epidemic which has swept the city back into the days of the wild west. However, on the other hand, many say "You cannot spell paradise without P.A.".

This is true you can't spell paradise without PA. lol.. Anyway, I dug up some info from stats canada on various social issues in the city. I'd like to add citations, but I don't know how. I'm sure its quite simple. Anyone able to fill me in on this? Oh..and does anyone else find it funny that if you search "prince albert wikipedia", the first thing that comes up is a male genital piercing? Perhaps we should have a link off of this page so that there's no confusion. Haha.

For the record, I just entered that exact string (both with and without quotes), and the first link is to the Wikipedia page. --Paul EJ King 00:47, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Problems with page edit

Personally I have a question to ask local P.A. residents. I have a problem with the fact that people operating this site adjust this page to how they want it, when it causes even errors with the city. For example someone claiming the city was situated north of the North Saskatchewan River. This page should only be changed by those who have a knowledge of the city, not moderators.

Well, I don't live in the town, but someone who (apparently) did scrawled junk on the page a while ago and I cleaned it. Your solution would mean (1) this individual could still put misinformation on, and (2) I (or someone like me) could not remove it. There is a responsibility to provide good information, however that responsibility is not accepted by all visitors, and geographical location doesn't influence that. I do take your point that people should be knowledgeable to write here, but it's hard to enforce. WhiteHatLurker 23:30, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Well as a resident of Prince Albert, I feel that any information whether geographical or whatever should be included. Anything that benefits the city is a good thing. Mr. C.C. 17:11, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
The purpose of the article is not to "benefit the city", but rather it's to provide a neutral article that describes Prince Albert in a factual context.

Per Wikipedia rules, any information posted here has to be verifiable. I'm not suggesting that either of your edits haven't been, but we just need to keep in mind that, for example, you couldn't post something that involved personal knowledge that hasn't been published in a source that other Wikipedians can check. As an example, somebody recently filled Brockville, Ontario with an extensive discussion, almost longer than the entire rest of the article combined, of organized crime in the city, right down to naming the names and hangouts of local hoods. That would be an example of something that doesn't belong here, since nobody can verify it through anything other than personal interaction, and something that an administrator would be justified in removing even if they knew nothing about the city. Bearcat 03:37, 12 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I see where you are coming from. But geographical items can be verified if you look hard enough. Sure there will be some people who will make the page look bad if they don't agree with something. But for the most part, I put on the page stuff I know seeing as I am a Prince Albert resident.

If anyone needs answers to questions, then I will try my best to answer them. Mr. C.C. 07:51, 18 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

St. Paul's Presbyterian Church edit

St. Paul's was the first church in the Prince Albert settlement about 100 years or so ago. They just celebrated it's birthday a week or two ago. Mr. C.C. 17:11, 1 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Celebrity List edit

I recognize that a "celebrity list" is problematic - celebrities change both in respect to the list itself, as well as our perception of the people on it. There is also invariably disagreement as to what constitutes a celebrity. (For instance, many of us have a bit of a problem with Don Cherry's position on the list of the 100 Most Important Canadians in History done by the CBC sometime last year - others will disagree, obviously.)

However, if you are going to begin listing NHL players as celebrities, I'm sure there are others that could be mentioned. When I was young, I remember going to a celebration of the one of the cities "big birthdays" (I thought it was it 75th, but doesn't make sense if the city was established in 1885 as your article suggests, since I doubt I attended many celebrations 4 years before my birth). I was very excited because Jim Nielson and another player from the NY Rangers were there signing autographs. (I think the other players name was something like Dave Balon, but I can't recall.) I think they were both from Prince Albert, though I'm not sure whether they were born and raised there. Jim certainly lived in P.A. for a long time because I knew him and his daughters quite well. David Tippet (Tipett/Tippett?) is also from Prince Albert (he was a player and now coaches the Dallas Stars).

Another celebrity that comes to mind is the writer Max Braithwaite. He was born in Nikomis, but grew up in Prince Albert. I believe in one of his books he has a story about tobagganing down 6th Avenue west and having to bail out because the train is coming.

Braithwaite was born in a town called Nokomis, and in his story, "Never Sleep Three in a Bed", he has an anecdote about riding a tobaggan down the hill in P.A., but the street is 2nd Avenue West. Good Ninja

Prince Albert's (the person) Picture edit

Is it really necessary to have a picture of the man, Prince Albert, at the head of the page? Most residents have no idea who he was or what he did. I would suggest a picture here of the the city's skyline and have the picture of Prince "What's his name?/Who cares" down below. Good Ninja

Prince Albert is named after the prince after all. It wouldn't hurt to put a picture of him on the page. Mr. C.C. 17:07, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
I agree. It does make the article more interesting. The point of an encyclopedia, after all, is not to reflect to people what is already familiar to them, but to show them soemething they can't get elsewhere. I think it raises the profile of the whole article. In fact, my first reaction was: Great! Where did they get that picture? Apart from that, the PA skyline does not make it stand out from other small-city skylines, so I'm glad you chose not to highlight it. --Paul EJ King 00:55, 15 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
Added a note to tie in the picture of the person to the article itself. That he is the namesake.SriMesh | talk 21:12, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Population edit

I though the population is just over 40,000. We are larger than 34,000 from the last census. Mr. C.C. (talk) 07:29, 11 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your most certainly right, PA's population is now over 40 000. According to 2007-2008 tourism saskatchewan our population is slightly over 40 000. Though stats canada most likely does not include rural communites, even though technically they are a part of prince albert, due to the fact that the dwellings do not reside in PA's boarder they are excluded. These communites include but are not limited to places such as buckland. I'll see what I can do to improve the population stats. Also if someone could work on city ifastructure I would greatly be pleased, the transit part was a nice beginning. —Preceding unsigned comment added by KermitCrack (talkcontribs) 02:25, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Flag of Prince Albert.gif edit

Image:Flag of Prince Albert.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Possible Revisions edit

  • Demographics could use template for statistics such as at North Battleford, Saskatchewan, else could be put into prose format.
  • Interesting Facts section could be put into prose format and not bulleted list format, and added to history or elsewhere in article.
  • More sports are happening (I thinks) in Prince Albert than just hockey.
  • Festivals could be written in prose and not list format, with less red links and more citations.
  • Famous Prince Albertans could be their own list, with citations again, and those notable Prince Albertans added to this article in prose format as to their contribution to the Prince Albert community. A tabular format for lists of people works well such as List of Athabasca University people
  • The external links section repeats wikilink references, which are not necessary to have in both areas. Web sites are better listed as references within the article rather than in an external link section.

Some external links are questionable as to the information gleaned about the city of Prince Albert such as...Cooke Municipal Golf Course..does this website talk about the city or is this a tourism destination in Prince Albert. The golf if notable in Prince Albert could be added to the sports section, with an inline reference to Cooke Municipal Golf Course instead.

  • The Arts and Entertainment section is very very full and lengthy, it should be its own article, with edited important highlights within this article, and reference to ...Main article here.... The arts and entertainment scene it is much larger than Prince Albert's other sections, which are also important and notable to Prince Albert in their own right as well, but are being foreshadowed by the Arts and Entertainment section.
  • Can the editor who added the Arts and Entertainment section add citations? There are not too many online in this regards.
  • Also, is...Carlton Comprehensive High School (largest high school in Saskatchewan)..the largest in student population or the largest in square feet (sauare meters)?

IMHO...70.64.182.182 (talk) 22:41, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I started the whole section on music and entertainment. Though many others added their two cents, I find it difficult if not impossible to create citations for many sections I created due to the fact this is Prince Albert and many events are not prominate enough to have a web based appeal. Drama for instance is unfinished due to Carlton's web site being changed/updated and the drama page being erased. Since I am connected to may aspects of what I write, I can give you my word all info provided by myself is text book/internet fact based, and words straight from the people involved in the project. Ie. Drama teachers, Band members. For those of you who doubt me,perhaps its time to leave the digital domain and go to a drama production or a band concert. —Preceding unsigned comment added by KermitCrack (talkcontribs) 05:10, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I added to the music and entertainment section, along with other sections, but we there needs to be some references in the rave/electronic, alternative rock, and punk rock sections. Mr. C.C. (talk) 05:50, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
For the references, is it possible if you are that close to the scene, to list something other than a web site...

Citation choices possible an article in a newspaper or use the conference report or paper template for a paper or report given by the school, project, drama theatre etc. If the citation of how to access the paper is given, it is a valid reference, that someone can go to a school/public library and verify, even if it is changing, they can find the historical paper/book etc Kind RegardsSriMesh | talk 02:22, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

History Of Prince Albert edit

I found some history of Prince Albert on the P.A. Tourism website.[1] Someone should take a look at it and see what could be added to the history section already in place. It would provide to be useful for citations. Mr. C.C. (talk) 07:35, 13 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Who is Chris Kent- BK? what is a BK and what has he to do with PA?SriMesh | talk 04:08, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

That is what I am wondering. Stick a citation needed tag beside that listing on the entry. Or just remove it all together. Mr. C.C. (talk) 16:17, 27 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Matt Wyllie - singer/songwriter edit

Notable people had included Matt Wyllie - singer/songwriter without citation or reference. Can only find his facebook page. Should probably have a different source for notability.SriMesh | talk 03:49, 28 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

If he plays at Turks Coffee Shop, than he is not notable at all. Mr. C.C. (talk) 17:26, 29 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Notable Citizens edit

The notable citizens heading seems a bit cluttered with the way it is has been expanded. You are adding extra. stuff that doesn't need to be there. I mean you totally left Blair Morgan out of the athletes section. If you check the Saskatoon notable section, you will see that you can have all the information while still keeping the list bulleted. Nicknames edit

There are too many nicknames entered in the infobox. "P. A." the initials of the city is often used but the others are not in use.-- Kayoty (talk) 20:52, 30 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Further editing needed edit

Removed some material relating to climate, attractions and education that are not notable and that are not referenced. Some sections on attractions and education need references and clarification. The section on government needs to be expanded. The section on railroads appears to be too long but could eventually be moved to a new page such as "History of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan".-- Kayoty (talk) 02:48, 19 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
