The town of Porter is in an Indiana county of the same name. Both the county and the town were named after Admiral David Porter. Porter was a successful Admiral for the United States prior to the Navy's official beginning. Two of his sons were the first and second official Admirals for the navy. His adopted son, David Faragot was decorated as the first Admiral in the Navy of the United States of America and later was the first Secretary of the Navy. His biological son David Dixon Faragot was the second official Admiral in the Navy and is pictured with Abraham Lincoln, General Sherman and General U. S. Grant in the White House painting entitled The Peace Makers. The painting took place on Admiral David Dixon Porter's ship near the end of the Civil War. The four men were discussing the best way to end the war without doing the nation further damage. The people of Porter Indiana named the town after David Porter because they were impressed with his bravery in sea battles. Porter's two famous sons learned their skills as Admirals from their father as they accompanied him on his naval exploits. <ref> Main Library Porter, Indiana. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.193.200.141 (talk) 16:19, 16 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
