Barrett's solo work all comes after Proud seemingly ends his career in the 60s. So it's an empty statement: he didn't know Barrett's (solo) work because it didn't yet exist. However the statement could be construed to mean he didn't know Pink Floyd (which were a fairly popular band even at that time), and this should require some source --- an interview perhaps?
