I am reverting this redirect so that it again points to Phi Kappa Psi, to which it pointed for about four years. "Phi Psi" has been the widely used nickname for this fraternity for over 150 years, and it appears near the top of the Phi Kappa Psi page.

Is there any legitimate reason for this name to redirect to Dihedral angle#Dihedral angles of biological molecules? The phrase Phi Psi does not appear on that page. If there is a reason then I presume that we need a disambiguation page. Led by truth (talk) 20:24, 4 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

You should have looked off-wiki. It is very common in discourse about dihedral angles of biological molecules to use the two syllables of “phi psi” (omitting reference to the third angle) instead of the fourteen of “dihedral angles of biological molecules”. And, amongst non-Americans, slang for molecular biology is far more common than nicknames for American college fraternities. —SlamDiego_←T 21:58, 8 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Phi Psi's adjective (professional or honor society) edit

An Anon editor switched the label for Phi Psi (Professional) on this DAB page to declare that Phi Psi (Professional) is an "honor society". This appears to be unsupportable, even if offered in good faith, and I have changed it back. Historically Phi Psi has solidly been a professional organization, and even if no longer residential, it never appears to have changed its constitution of bylaws to veer from that model.

Professional fraternities offer both undergraduate and career engagement. Originally designed to support a residential experience for those in a specific field of study, many chapters of such fraternities (and sororities) are no longer residential, but their programming is solidly in support of improving their undergraduates. Conversely, Honor societies are non-residential and normally focused on engagement after graduation. (There are exceptions, and the lines blur.) Some national organizations of these two types have switched their emphasis to become the other style. (Phi Delta Phi, law, became an honor society, formerly professional, and passed necessary legislation to effect this change in 2012.)

While all professional fraternities and sororities have scholastic requirements and honor their members' achievements, this is different from being an Honor society. Jax MN (talk) 15:55, 25 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
