This is my first shot at creating a new article. Hope I've got the basics done ok. Not sure if there are templates specific to Australian or West Australian projects that need to be considered. Will return in next days to add verifiable content. Plenty of existing articles can be linked to from here.GlenDillon 12:41, 12 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

added banner then wondered why WA didn't show up. Checked WP West Aust project and realised that the article first needs to be SUPPORTED by the project, yet I've not even discussed it anywhere yet. Apologies if I've slipped up here or 'exceeded my authority'. I'm sure someone will set me straight soon enough! If the banner needs to be removed - please do so. Removed all subheaders (too prescriptive and a bit presumptuous). Copy created at User:Glen Dillon/WA petroleum working copy GlenDillon 07:00, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

additional material added though I acknowledge that many of the statements are uncited. Have references for almost everything and will include in the next instalment.GlenDillon 15:49, 13 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Added information regarding the January 2008 shutdown of NWS Karratha Plant. Keelback (talk) 08:06, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

title edit

There have been some reversions of the title of the article - please - if making further - could a good explanation be provided here on the talk page if further changes are made - thanks SatuSuro 12:48, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

I moved the article to "Oil industry in Western Australia" because I feel that this title better reflects the content of the article. Nothing I read on this article falls outside the scope of the oil industry. Additionally, this article is part of the "Economy of Western Australia" series, and each article in that series is about a sector of the economy (mining, whaling, etc.). "Petroleum" is not a sector of the economy; the oil industry is. Furthermore, this is the only article on Wikipedia employing the title construction "Petroleum in x". All other articles dealing with the oil industry in a particular region follow the naming convention "Oil industry in x". Would anyone object to my moving the article back to "Oil industry in Western Australia"? Neelix (talk) 18:22, 17 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't object to it becoming Petroleum industry in Western Australia, or Hydrocarbon industry in Western Australia but this article isn't about the "Oil industry in x". If you read it you'll see that natural gas is the lion's share of the hydrocarbons extracted in WA. As for consistency, Category:Economy of Western Australia contains Mining in Western Australia, Pearling in Western Australia and Whaling in Western Australia: the current article name is consistent with them. Besides, the beauty of the WP categorisaton system is that articles don't have to have consistent names. We should always name based on content, not some external need.

shows abbreviated article titles in any case, so I still don't see what the problem is. Djanga 00:52, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Neelix: I don't have time right now (I'll provide more reasons if there's a need) to provide a comprehensive explanation of why the term "petroleum" is the only appropriate term that could be used. I'll give three reasons now. "Hydrocarbon" might suffice but it is not a term in common public usage so might detract from the accessibility of the article. Essentially, my argument would be that oil is but one product of the petroleum industry. Though it is commonly found associated with or adjacent to gas deposits but not always. Regardless, the article deals with a bunch of "sub-industries" such as gas transmission pipelines for example which have no connection with oil whatsoever. I concede that "Oil industry" is a term in common use (including in most of the worlds public media) but it is an generally used in a misleading way. There are probably historical reasons for this use - including that OIL industries were well developed by the early 20th century whereas widespread commercialisation of NATURAL GAS occurred later. In terms of structure, I would also refer to the naming of significant industry organisations - such as the American Petroleum Institute, Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association, Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Counntries (OPEC) etc. They reference the wider product stream (petroleum) rather than just oil. Finally - if the article title was 'Oil...", 70% of the content of the article may need to be removed to another article on gas. GlenDillon 00:54, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
I agree the term "industry" should be in the title.GlenDillon 01:20, 18 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Page needs updating edit

Appears to be information from mostly 2010; could do with an overall re-write Jondvdsn1 (talk) 12:40, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
