"His cremated remains were sent back to Iowa."

edit

Actually, apparently not. In Letters From Bohemia by Ben Hecht (pp. 76-79), Hecht relates a story about Pollard that Mencken told him. Pollard came to Baltimore to die of TB because Mencken had written him a number of adulatory letters. Mencken tried to get the remains mailed back to Iowa, but was told it was against federal law. A friend was the head bartender at a saloon frequented by big-name politicians, and told Mencken he would arrange it. However, later he confessed that he could not, because no-one wanted to take the chance of violating federal law. So he threw away the ashes, wrapped a box of Cremo cigars in tin foil, and sent that to the aunt in Waterloo, where the cigars were buried in the family graveyard under a nice tombstone. Mencken's point was "the dangers of becoming a literary man." However, this is a more major change than I am confident doing here, so I am leaving it to others to decide.
