details about anchor stores at Park Central Mall
editI lived in phoenix from 1961 until 1991 and Park Central Mall was the closest mall to my home. The article states that all 3 anchors were 2 level stores, in fact , during the 70's and early 80's at least, all 3 anchors operated 3 levels. J.C.Penny's had hardware , toys , sporting goods ,audio recordings , and if I remember correctly , T.V.s , stereos and housewares in the basement. This was back in the day when Penny's was a real department store offering a full line of goods. Penny's also had a full service auto center including gas pumps at Park Central seperate from the mall at the corner of 3rd ave. and Osborn rd. Sometime during the 80's as the mall began to lose customers Penny's closed the basement , and moved the electronics and photo dept. to the top level. I hated that because it was all the way in the back corner and you had to walk through the furniture section (which always seemed deserted and void of shoppers)just to buy film and videotape. Goldwaters also sold goods in thier basement , I remember buying housewares there. I rarely shopped at Diamonds but they had 3 levels also. A restaurant was on the second level if I remember correctly. I cant't remember if the basement was used or if they had 2 levels above the ground floor, seems to me the building was taller than either Penny's or Goldwaters.```` —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonel469 (talk • contribs) 18:47, 13 September 2010 (UTC)
comments on above details
editThe above details are an excellent contribution, honestly I could not find much that references physical characteristics of the mall other than many user comments on various websites talking about dead malls or the Phoenix of old. Although I do feel this article is going to have to be written mostly from memories as there is not much material to cite anyhow. The initial article here on Park Central was very short and light on details. I expanded the article as much as I could several years ago using information from around the internet as I was not old enough to experience Park Central in its heyday, my memories do not go past the 1980s. This is honestly the first I have heard of the anchors all having basements, any write up I did find on the mall describes it as "twin level”. Also user comments usually referred to an upper level, I never read any user comments describing a basement. I am not opposed to using your information of 3 levels, I personally will not make any changes unless I can find a second source that shows there were 3 level stores like a newspaper article, a picture or another user. editThank you for your response.I can relate to the difficulty of finding accurate information on the internet. Using dead mall sites can be real iffy ,there is one that has an article on ChrisTown/Spectrum Mall that has several inaccuracies even though the author provides a link to and recommends a excellent site on the mall. Guess he didn't have time to look at it before he wrote his article. So I appreciate your diligence.I'm going to contact a friend that still lives in Phoenix and see if she would be interested in putting her 2 cents worth in. Her husband was a buyer for Goldwaters in the late 60's - early 70's.
Thanks again , jonel469. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jonel469 (talk • contribs) 02:11, 16 September 2010 (UTC)
