Talk:Parents' Worship Day

Deletion edit

HI, the reason i nominated this article in the first place is that, its plain ridiculous.

1. it is promotional

2. it lacks anything worth of an encyclopedia article

3. I couldn't find a single govt website or anything official that declared such a thing as recognized.

4. there is no "Parent's worship day", observed/followed/celebrated anywhere in India. It was probably a one time thing, some politicians gave a comment about, amongst 100s of other things they say and not be serious about.

5. there is not a single instance where a well-known newspaper says that some one celebrated it.

the only instance to be found is this

http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/worship-parents-on-valentines-day-asaram-bapu/1/171080.html

and even this reads "Worship parents on Valentine's Day, says Asaram Bapu".

another reference gives a 404 not found

http://www.statetimes.in/news/parents-worship-day-celebrated/

another link has nothing related to this article

http://www.merinews.com/article/chhattisgarh-makes-parents-worship-day-a-compulsory-observance-in-schools-on-february-14/15881586.shtml&cp

6. only place you find mention of this, is at below promotional website for the same organization.

Content for the article - Dec 2017 edit

I'm trying to keep this short article tidy by not having a lot of references that all say basically the same thing and several of which say they are sourced from ANI (what is that? don't know...). In terms of state sanction, the only thing I can see from any source is that Chhattisgarh schools mandated the celebration in 2013. Other than that it is not officially celebrated anywhere according to the sources. There was one celebration in one location in Jammu, which doesn't seem notable enough to mention. And a Collector(?) sent out a letter saying people should celebrate it. Is that binding? The source didn't indicate it was... is it noteworthy? I as an average editor can't see how it is, but I'm willing to be convinced. --Klaun (talk) 02:21, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Klaun Why are you removing the important references. ANI is Asian News International which is Indian news agency based in New Delhi. So if you don't have information about news agencies then please do some research instead of deleting the references. Also. the celebration in Jammu was by a Hindu organization and if a short referenced description was added regarding it, then I don't think there was any need to delete it. Collector notices are considered important in India, still you removed the well-referenced information. If you are not convinced you should discuss, instead of directly removing. Also, it's not necessary that something is important only if "officially celebrated", many movements by "people/NGOs" are not official, still worth mentioning example[1][2]!
Although, Parents Worship Day got official support from CM/collector of some states/districts. Amicable always (talk) 03:22, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
We do not need big block quotes. It is fine to state facts, simply. Jytdog (talk) 04:20, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
The content about Jammu had statements that weren't supported by the reference. It indicated that an annual state sponsored holiday was held there, when the reference was about a single event, at one location, and it was not clear that it was state-sponsored. Similarly, the Collector notice snippet made it seem like a state in India had adopted the holiday as official, whereas the reference simply stated a collector sent a letter about the holiday. The average reader isn't going to know the significance of that. If collector is an important position in India, perhaps you should start with an article about that subject... because it's pretty hard to find info on what a collector is. The content that is added needs to accurately reflect the information in references. The removed content was inaccurate at reflecting the references and in my reading seemed aim at inflating the importance of this event. Content added at Wikipedia must be verifiable. Mentioning that one celebration one time at Jammu and the letter from the collector simply would be a verifiable addition. But then the question becomes are those events significant enough to include in the article? --Klaun (talk) 14:16, 20 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Content regarding Jammu, had this line only: "In 2016(it should be 2015), Sanatan Dharam Sabha, Jammu started celebrating Parents Worship Day on 14th February in Jammu state". And as you can refer the references, the celebration in 2015[3], 2016: [4],[5]. It clearly indicates that Sanatan Dharam Sabha has started celebrating the event regularly. It is not stating anything about state-sponsored because Sanatan Dharam Sabha is a Hindu organization, hence the content was exactly as per what is stated in the references. Also regarding the significance of Collector in India, you can refer this Wiki Page which already exists: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_Collector_(India) . In addition, the celebration in Jammu was not one-time, it was consecutive celebration twice in 2015,2016 as you can see in the references that I have mentioned above. refs edit

please make sure you include the dateline for newspaper articles. We do not need the "access date" for newspaper articles that have datelines. Nobody cares when you read it - what matters is when it was published. Please also keep WP:RELTIME in mind. Things happen in time. Jytdog (talk) 02:20, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Added the reference [6] since it's needed to specify that the celebration is being held in colleges also along with schools. Amicable always (talk) 09:33, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup of articles edit

While searching for references for this article, I found that in addition to the section at Asaram on this subject there is this article: Matru-Pitru Pujan Diwas and also this article Valentine's Day in India. I don't see how this subject is notable enough for this much attention. Also, given the diverse editors of the different articles and sections, the content is not in sync. Some of these articles need to be deleted or merged. --Klaun (talk) 15:14, 22 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of referenced content edit

Hi User:Jytdog, Please let me know why you have reverted the well-referenced content? Just see your diff here: [7] [8] and observe that all the referenced content which you have deleted was based either on "facts" regarding the government notices about the celebration or the news links of celebration by Hindu organizations. In this revision of page, (what you did after reverting all my edits): https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Parents%27_Worship_Day&oldid=816723428 You have made this page to just a one-liner version which simply denotes that Asaram Bapu started this event and nothing else. Do you still think this is justified? A festival which is celebrated in majors states of India. Few states have even made this festival official in the schools of the state but still, you have deleted the entire information. And you mentioned it as "soap" content. But as you can see yourself, every single word which I wrote was exactly as per references. Still, you have deleted. Let me know why or else restore the content after analyzing properly. Also here[9] you mentioned "no discussion of time as needed per WP:RELTIME". I request you to first read this [10] It states that "relative time" is not allowed. But the absolute time - exact time such as 2017 etc are allowed. It nowhere states that "discussion of time is not allowed". Seems you have misunderstood the concept of WP:RELTIME and removed the time which was not relative since the year 2016, 2015 is not "relative". Instead "one year ago" and "two year ago" etc are relative. The correct content should be restored.Amicable always (talk) 09:32, 23 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
Things happen in time - the education minister of Jharkland said a thing this year that applies to next year. That is what RELTIME is about - it is as bad to say "recently" as to give no date at all.
This is an encyclopedia - please keep things at a high level of summary. We don't need to recount every neighborhood that celebrates and I am not sure we should even be recording each state. Jytdog (talk) 22:43, 23 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
The education minister of Jharkhand had issued the notice of celebrating the event in "50 thousand government schools" and "50,000" is not a small number. So, this fact must not be removed from the Wiki - diff[11] Also you have replaced the word "government schools" with "public schools". In India, only two types of schools are well-known-government schools and private schools. Hence term public schools may be valid for other countries but not for India. And since this article is about India, hence it should be written as "government schools"[12] Also a notice was issued in the form of a letter. Hence added that fact as per reference. It's about a festival that was started in India in 2011. Hence, it's important to specify that which states have adopted it as an official event and in which state, people/non-governmental organization have started celebrating it, and at what scale. So that by reading Wiki people can gauge the perception of people towards are event.Amicable always (talk) 04:14, 24 December 2017 (UTC)Reply
