It is a bit confusing. Officially, the magazine is a "conservative journal of opinion," although many of ideas and values that it promotes might be better described as libertarian. The Commentator has a reputation on the University of Oregon campus for being conservative on many issues relating to the economy, markets and student government but when it comes to social issues, it swings left. Over the years, the OC has published many articles extolling the virtues of alcohol, vice, sex, resisting police/authority figures and other not so traditionally prudent activities. The works of Hunter S. Thompson are often quoted in the OC. The famed writer and his works are considered something of a guiding light for multiple generations of writers and editors, dating back to the publication's birth in the early '80s. All of this is further exemplified in the Commentator's mascot, "Sudsy," a cartoon beer pitcher with a cigar. I hope this clears things up.
