a start
editI found it unbelievable that WP did not have such an article. I leave it up to those more specifically involved in the topic whether to mark this as a disambiguation page, or whether to expand the article. The list of types of online databases is of course intended to be expanded, but I await suggestions of how to deal with this term.
Other articles for other types of online databases than bibiographic ones are either already written by others, or, for those relevant to an academic/library setting, are being written. DGG 04:38, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

internet
editI'm not sure you are right. I was using dialog and other online database on dial up or other primitive connections long before there was a presence on the internet. There are 100s of local systems, if not hundreds of thousands. But I am not in the least happy with my own definition. perhaps you can help me improve it in an inclusive way. To me, it basically means any database not queried in batch mode, but Id like to word it more positively. DGG 06:28, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Isn't this just a feature?
editI don't think there really is any distinction between a general database and one that supports networking. MySQL for example can act as both, and this is true of just about every mature DBMS. Network accessibility is just one specific feature of a database, and hardly worthy of its own article. That said, database does need to be expanded to talk about networking. I suggest a merge/redirect. Ham Pastrami (talk) 04:54, 21 June 2008 (UTC)
Definition Suggested Update
editI agree that there isn't any distinction between a general database and one that supports networking. To that point, why is the definition here "An online database is a database accessible by the internet"? I suggest the definition is amended to: "An online database is a database accessible by a network, including by the internet." As support, the dictionary definition can be found for example at this URL http://www.audioenglish.net/dictionary/on-line_database.htm. Thanks. Oshields (talk) 00:59, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Additional Differences to Help Clarify between Web Database Service and Traditional Databases
editSuggest adding additional differences to clarify what a web database service is as compared to a traditional database: "1) While traditional databases can be used on a network, they typically require an in-depth knowledge to utilize. Hosted databases provide an website interface between the database and the user, allowing the user to create a database without having to deal with database installation, hosting and front-end coding with programming languages. 2) Functionality of web database services may not be as advanced as with the traditional database products, for example a Web database service cannot offer all the flexibility of custom-coding your own. 3) The ability to share and collaborate on structured data via a Web interface is increasingly useful as virtual collaboration becomes more common."

Suggest linking to Cloud database from discussion of SaaS databases
editThere is a disambiguation paragraph saying that another form of "online databases" is databases provided as a service, this is exactly the subject of a new entry I have authored, Cloud database. I suggest linking to the entry from this paragraph, is it okay if I make the edit? Anne.naimoli (talk) 11:47, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
