The expression one-trick pony - does it really go back as far as 1905 ?

Hello. In the article it says : The OED's first citation is from 1905. . Yup, the OED says so, but I am afraid they fell for a misunderstanding. :-o See here for the entry in the OED : http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/131358?redirectedFrom=one-trick%20pony#eid33557400

The Quote is : Among the earliest of mundane things remembered are the resplendent red shirts of the volunteer firemen, conspicuous in every Fourth of July parade; the marvels that were seen at the first one-tent, one-clown, one-trick-pony, pioneer Oregon circus. To me it seems that this is referring to one trick-pony, instead of a one-trick pony - a circus so small it has only one tent, one clown, one pony that can do tricks.

However, I do realise it is the holy OED, and I am not a native English speaker - so I leave it to someone else to either edit this or not. PS - Merriam-Webster claims first know use is 1980. :D 46.142.35.176 (talk) 11:42, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
