Update on clan Assn. (Malin Head B&B?)

edit

Regarding the statement: "To this end, the family continues on as a voluntary organisation involved in history and genealogy, operating a bed and breakfast at Malin Head on the northern tip of Inishowen, and hosts regular family reunions."

I am involved with the clan association and am not familiar with a Malin Head B&B that represents the clan assn. Please provide more info, otherwise I will edit the page to reflect the following...

The O'Dochartaigh (Doherty) Clann Association is North American-based (USA/Canada) with an international focus. The founder, Pat Dougherty, moved to Ireland in the early 1980s. As clan herald he ran a B&B on Inch Island and did family research. Pat has reduced his involvement in the clan assn. but continues as the clan herald and provides genological research services from Buncrana.

Doherty reunions in Ireland are organized by the O'Dochartaigh Irish Reunion Committee, chaired by James 'Sausage' Douherty (an amalgamation of the reunion committees from Inishowen and Derry). Pat was the USA rep on the Inishowen Reunion Committee. A summary of these organizations will be posted on the O'Dochartaigh website by the end of Sep 2006.

The above wording-change proposed by Daniel Doherty ought to be incorporated immediately. His statement corrects the prior statement's error and adds clearer understanding. Dan is currently on the Executive Board of the O'Dochartaigh Clann Association and speaks with the authority worthy of his office. From a fellow boardmember, Cameron Dougherty, son of the Clan Herald.

Move

edit

I think that this article should be moved to "Ó Dochartaigh" and the "Doherty" references changed to Ó Dochartaigh, as Doherty excludes other variations of the name. The Doherty page can then be redirected to Ó Dochartaigh. Any thoughts? Dun 18:43, 22 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree, as "Ó Dochartaigh" is the original clan name, whereas "Doherty" is simply the more modern anglicized variant of the name. —Skope (talk) 01:23, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I disagree, because of WP:use english. If this was the Irish-language WP then go ahead. Which, BTW, really should get done. Kevlar67 (talk) 03:41, 9 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
But WP:use english also refers to WP:Manual_of_Style_(Ireland-related_articles), which calls for some common sense on this issue. There is no explicit guidelines regarding generic surname pages, but it also shows precedents for using the original Irish versions in the English WP. Doherty may be the most common version of Ó Dochartaigh in Ireland, but Dougherty is more common in the USA. Dun (talk) 16:43, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm in favour of the most inclusive solution. "Doherty" appears to be the original anglicization, however "O'Dochartaigh" is a common source for all spellings hence my use of www.odochartaigh.org. The only issue I have using O'Dochartaigh is that is is rather obscure for general usage. However, the magic of wikipedia is that anyone searching for their name can be redirected to the source article...just like they are redirected to "Doherty" now. If there is consenus, we can give it a try. Then we can add some depth to the article with the history of the different lines. D1doherty (talk) 08:18, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Spelling of the name...cite sources

edit

Thanks to those who have been updating this article and repairing the vandalism.

I notice there were a number of circular edits regarding spelling. It would be helpful if people add a comment when they make a change and/or cite their sources. For example:

  • Spelling: Pat Dougherty (Clann Herald) identified about 140 ways to spell the name (1990s). and I understand from Pat it was the official anglicization at the time the British government outlawed the "O" and made the change from Gaelic.
  • Older documents spell Cahir's name in a variety of ways. Modern usage seems to be O'Doherty. * Currently Doherty appears to be the most common usage (20 million Google hits vs 9 million for Dougherty)

I'd love to validate Pat's anecdotal info with concrete sources if you have them. ---Daniel D1doherty (talk) 08:10, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

People

edit

Is it really practical to list people? Doherty and its variants are common family names and listing people with that name really adds nothing to the article other than some puffery. Due to intermarriages and even similar names in other languages, the relation of these names could be tenuous at best. I suggest eliminating this section; important names in the history of the clan should be addressed in the discussion of the history of the clan. Wkharrisjr (talk) 18:57, 18 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your observation. I agree, it seems impractical to maintain a list individuals when Wikipedia provides a people search option. I suggest we simply point to that and let folks search on the version of the name they want. I removed the list and provided the most common Wikipedia variants as a starting point. Clan Assn Webmaster D1doherty (talk) 04:42, 25 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

At present there is a large list of people, none of which are verifiably members of the family. It seems there is the assumption that everyone called O'Doherty, Doherty or Docherty is a member of the family, there is no proof this is the case.DanceHallCrasher (talk) 15:32, 16 October 2016 (UTC)Reply
