Industry

edit

I have added information on the founding of New Plymouth and the effect on the town of the land wars of 1860-61, as well as some of the factors concerning New Plymouth settlement that helped contribute to the conflict. If the article is lacking anything substantial, it's coverage of the petrochemical industry, which has been a fairly strong economic driver since the late '70s. Is someone able to add some material on this? Thanks. Grimhim 10:27, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

History section

edit

Is way too long and prominent for a city entry for Wikipedia. suggest create unique entry. Michellecrisp 06:03, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

You may be right. It does take over a bit. I'll carve it out and create a new article for the history.Grimhim 06:11, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

New Plymouth suburbs

edit

New Plymouth seems to suffer more than most NZ cities from vaguely defined suburbs. Census meshblock names are not much help, as some seem rather arbitrary. For example, I live in "Mt Bryan" according to statistics NZ, yet that name has zero local usage (most NewPlymouthites would say "where's that?) and does not appear on any maps. One utility company has us as "Strandon" and another as "Welbourn". We consider ourselves to be "central". I've just moved a few schools about, but more may be needed: NPGHS is probably "Strandon" rather than central, and NPBHS should be "Welbourn" as it is up on the plateau. dramatic (talk) 11:42, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

This is a problem for all New Zealand cities, I think. I use a combination of street maps and Google Earth to try to decide what is a suburb and what isn't, and where the boundaries might fall, but local knowledge is more important. Unfortunately, I don't know New Plymouth at all well.
The census districts don't have a lot in common with suburbs. This might be partly because the census districts don't seem to have changed for some time - at least not since 2001, and some areas (such as the outskirts of Auckland) have grown hugely during the last decade.
When you move school entries between suburbs, please also change the redirect to that school. The redirects can be found in List of schools in Taranaki, New Zealand. I've done this for the two school entries you moved to Brookdale.-gadfium 20:16, 16 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Assessment comment

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:New Plymouth/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

The article is approaching B class, but some sections lack references, especially the "Features and attractions" section, but also much of the material in "Growth and governance". I also find it a little bit disorganised, with the "History" section only covering up to the 1860s (as does the main article History of New Plymouth), but with several other sections containing more recent history. I suggest that the first two sections of "Growth and governance", and the 1989 local body reorganisation, be moved within the "History" section, and the remainder of the "New Plymouth District Council" section be promoted to a top-level section. Most of the "Transport and industry" section also belongs in "History".-gadfium 02:56, 19 April 2009 (UTC)Reply
