Deprivation and Discontent?

If deprivation and discontent were alone responsible for the New Mexico State Penitentiary Riot, then we should expect the same results from monks in a monastery who equally deprived and discontented. Both the riot and the savagery was caused by one factor... the nature of the beasts locked inside the prison. The same thing occurs in any prison where the inmates can gain an upper hand. It is wrong to seek blame in the administration of the prison and to say that if officials had been accomodating enough that the riot would have never occured.

Officials should not have waited 36 hours before entering to regain control. That they did is due to the same restraints placed on them by the very system that blames them for the riot in the first place.

The same thing occurs in any prison where inmates are treated worse than animals which is, has been, and apparently always WILL BE the case in the United States prison systems. To compare life in a prison with life in a monastery shows an appalling ignorance (or willful stupidity) on the part of the author above. The administration of the prison runs the prison. They know the relationship between inmates and guards, they know exactly what their guards are doing in the prison to prisoners, they know when the prisoners are discontent, they know when a pot is going to boil over. The men in question were wards of the state. The state is responsible for everything that happens to them. There is no legal basis for confining people against their will and then claiming that anything that happens to them is "their fault". Not even the in United States. They were not "wards of the state" they were convicted felons who had been sentenced to prison for their criminal acts. Punish But Do Not Destroy

The goal,mission and or purpose of the Criminal Justice System ought to be or should be one of Punishing and not Destroying. If a Citizen does not obey or followed a Law which should be followed if one is to live freely in a Civilized Society than he should be punish. According to Author Adolph Saenz in his Book Politics Of A Prison Riot, (1986) in 1980, Conditions at New Mexico State Prison where so Deplorable that they were Inhumane. Accoridng to the Author when the Inmates made their first written demands (to release their hostages), "the demands were not Unreasonable". According to the Author one inmate was heard yelling, "treat us like men", in fact what he was saying, was "treat us like human beings".

Normally I am not too troubled by descriptions of violence, but some of the descriptions in this article are utterly horrific.
