Some sources, including a 2008 book (Beatles For Sale: How Everything They Touched Turned to Gold) and an article from 1966, give his surname as "Winterbottom" rather than "Winterbotham", notwithstanding several- fairly modern- sources giving the latter spelling. Regarding his "aristocratic" family, there is no peerage or gentry family named "Winterbotham" (check, for example, Burke's Family Index, which is regarded as comprehensive); there is, however, a life peer, Ian Winterbottom, a politician and businessman from a family of Yorkshire merchants (not aristocrats) who was created Baron Winterbottom in 1965. There is a 1945 birth record for a Neil A. Winterbottom, mother Kowalska; per internet records, an Alistair Winterbottom married Maria Kersti Kowalska, and was himself brother of Ian, Baron Winterbottom. This is corroborated by the book scans here - http://www.susandoreydesigns.com/genealogy/clirehugh/Winterbottom.pdf - showing Neil Alistair Winterbottom b. 1945 as son of these parents and the link to Ian Winterbottom, which is the only real basis for calling Neil Winterbottom's family "aristocratic", aside from his private education, which misleads people quite often.
