Merge dystrophy, muscle atrophy and muscle weakness

The terms are related, and the articles all quite short, especially the first, since details for specific variations are found on other pages. --nkayesmith 02:06, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree this should be merged into the muscle atrophy article... I can add the parts about weakness, and the correlation between atrophy and weakness...

Merging dystrophy should be no problem, but the other two are independent (though related), and should not be merged (see Muscle+Weakness at the U.S. National Library of Medicine Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and Muscular+Atrophy at the U.S. National Library of Medicine Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) for defs). --Arcadian 01:03, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Actually, dystrophy is completely distinct from atrophy - since dystrophy is caused by genetic mutations that usually cause structural problems in the muscle - resulting in myofiber breakdown and consequence regeneration... this mechanism is distinct from atrophy... though the result obviously is weakness.

As opposed to getting atrophic muscle, in early stages of dystrophy you actually see compensatory hypertrophy - muscle that is larger in size, but relatively weak, due to the problems with the actual muscle fibers. Gacggt 12:05, 30 March 2007 (UTC)

Confusing/nonsensical Sentence

Rename to Weakness

This is the generic term and should be the name of this article. A UTI is one of the main causes of weakness but does not particularly pertain to mm. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 17:13, 16 February 2010 (UTC)

CFS & "true & perceived"

I removed the claim that true muscle weakness doesn't occur in CFS, which was contradicted by the well-referenced next sentence anyway, as well as e.g. [1].
