I've reverted the recent cat additons, as I said in my edit summary, "He's not a British citizen, so the two British categories are inappropriate. He's not yet convicted, so terrorist cats are inappropriate" Labelling someone as a terrorist before he's even charged (let alone convicted) seems to breach the BLP policy if nothing else

The terrorist part I'm willing to accept, but British has nothing to do with being a citizen. If that's the criteria, then you would need to remove many people from the different "British" categories. Misheu 12:22, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Much media coverage has focussed on teh fact that non of the susepcts are British - it therefore seems odd to include them in these categories. None have been resident for a aprticularly long period of time either. Do you have specifc examples of people being included in British categories in such circumstances - I'd be interested to see the reasoning in each case. David Underdown 12:28, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

None of teh suspects is a British citizen, though some were supposedly in the process of getting it. To answer your question, I think there are, but I do not have the time or energy to look for such people, so I won't bother. How long is a long period of time? If two years is not enough to be called British, then would 5 years be good enough? 20 if you don't bother getting citizenship? These things are rather fluid, I think. Personally it would seem to me that citizenship (and possibly birthplace) would be the most objective way of attaching these categories - I did leave British muslim on one of them as he ws at least born here, albeit to an Iraqi father, and was raised mostly in Iraq. I'd prefer not to really look at the length of residence at all, although I can see that others might argue the contrary (which is why I mentioned it at all). By the way, the reason I came to this at all was because of this WP:ANI#Mohammed Atta, those who have commented there seem to feel it should be applied by nationality as well. I strongly disagree with the idea someone has to be a citizen to be called British (or any other such cats). Yes it may be convinient but it leads to a lot of silly situations such as where someone who has been Britain for e.g. 50/51 years somehow being not British (not speaking of any specific case here but I'm sure there are cases). However I'm not so sure whether to call Asha, British. 2 years isn't long and from what I can tell he didn't even have a residence permit although the fact that he's applying for British citizenship says something. Any info on whether Asha self identified as being British? Nil Einne 06:51, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
