Rhode Island has never won the Miss USA crown, but they have come close. In 1973, Gayle White, Miss Rhode Island USA took that step into the winner's circle as Second Runner-up to Miss USA.

With Bob Barker as the host, the pageant was held in the Broadway Theater in NYC, in May, 1973. Among the judges were former world heavyweight boxing champion, Smokin’ Joe Frazier; seven-time Academy Award nominee, Peter O’Toole; Actress, Writer, and Businesswoman once named “Most Beautiful Woman in the World”, Arlene Dahl; Best-selling author, Jacqueline Susann; Pop Artist, Peter Max; Couturier, Halston.; and Dr. Irwin Stillman of the Stillman Diet Fame.

Ms. White is a Professor of Art and Studio Artist with work in private collections, including The White House. She makes her home in East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
