Article Organization
editEven if all the categories in this article were filled out, this article has poor organization. If each of those categories were properly finished this article would run over 100k. I think many of these categories need to be condensed into more general categories. For example: Ancient World, Middle Ages, Renaissance (nominally, Hapsburg dynasty), War in the 18th and 19th century, Modern age. That gives full coverage, and specific wars can be wikilinked. Otherwise, this article will remain ugly. What do you think? Furthermore, I think this will have to be a collaboration of the Task Force - members can fill in and reference areas they are well versed in. I could complete the modern history of Spain, as well as the ancient history, for example. JonCatalan 00:57, 4 March 2007 (UTC)
- You make a good point, although I doubt that an article of this scope, properly completed, could or should be less than 60k (the subject might be one warranting sub articles in the future). Beyond that, if we want to avoid the article becoming a summary box for "Reconquista," "Spanish-American War," "Spanish Civil War," etc., our structure should aim to be analytical rather than narrative, with emphasis pinned on Spain's unique innovations in the field of military science as well as the social and political developments associated with Spain's conduct of war. Autrement dit, the substance of the article must be more than a rehash of the various conflicts explained elsewhere. The article should describe, for instance, the capabilities and organization of Spain's various historical armies and fleets, the Spanish political aims and aspirations associated with the wars mentioned above, and important trends in the evolution, even in peacetime, of the Spanish military establishment. UberCryxic's Military history of France would be a good model to follow. Albrecht 15:00, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- I completely agree with you! This article should focus on general information, which includes the developement of tactics, technology, et cetera. The rise of Spanish military dominance in Europe and the fall (30 Years War?), et cetera. I think that the most difficult area to cover will be wars between 1870 and ~1910 - namely the Carlist Wars. Do we have any experts on that period? JonCatalan 16:30, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
- We're almost completley missing the period of Spain's military greatness in the 15th and 16th century when it was both the strongest land and sea power. The adoption of the Tercio and the influence of Spanish military practise.Koonan the almost civilised 08:32, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
I think first we should worry about how to organize the article. No use writing for it if it's going to be refaced soon. JonCatalan 19:03, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
I have made several changes on the organization: wars of religion or italian wars only have no sense in the history of Spain. In fact the only in common between the many wars of those times was the european theatre, any more, so i have grupped those conflicts in two sections. I have added to new sections as the wars with the islamic powers in early modern age and the wars with Morocco. In many sections was needed to put at least the name of the war, now look like a list of wars but this is not the purpose but to put at least the base of future improvements on the article. --Bentaguayre 16:49, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
- All military history for Spain during and after World War II (like Vietnam) is completely under-reported, in the coming weeks I'll be doing some research but I wouldn't mind some help. Spain seems to kinda drop off the map after 1939. ColombianConservative 20:58, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- And no mention of the Spanish war against the ETA, or its contribution in the early years of the Iraq war, or its crackdown on Islamic extremists at home? ColombianConservative 20:58, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- On the basis of the discussion above, I've taken a stab at a UberCryxic style makeover. I've had to condense a couple of sections slightly (else the result would have been too far too long). I've also written some first drafts for the unpopulated bits of the article, and added some references. See what you think, and please revert as necessary if I've made a hash of any of it.Hchc2009 (talk) 20:47, 21 November 2009 (UTC)
- It looks good, but it devotes disproportionate space to modern history. Antiquity gets a scant two paragraphs and the entire Middle Ages is summed up in one section, while the whole period since 1939 gets as much. I know that this probably just reflects the interests/knowledge of the primary authors, but it is still a shortcoming (in the article, not those editors). Srnec (talk) 05:06, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
- Fair points. I've added a little bit more on the Antiquity bit (but I'm at the limits of my knowledge now!) and added a section on late Medieval affairs. Hchc2009 (talk) 09:49, 22 November 2009 (UTC)
