Do they require oxygen for growth or viability? I'll investigate, but does anyone else have info?

I disagree with User:178.197.229.27. The clue is in the name. 'Micro' means small, 'aero' means oxygen, and 'philic' means loving. Quoting from Stuart Hogg's 'Essential Microbiology' (page 99), "Microaerophiles require oxygen, but are only able to tolerate low concentrations of it (2-10%), finding higher concentrations harmful." Borrelia is wrongly classified

According to the source http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16814991 borrelia don't need oxygen. So they aren't microaerophile but obligate anaerobe. This is important for patients, because they should increase their oxygen intake. --178.197.236.82 (talk) 14:04, 7 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Actually, some Borellia are obligate anaerobe (inhibited growth by oxygen) and some have aerotolerance according to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16814991. --178.197.226.131 (talk) 14:10, 8 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
