Cleanup Tag

I don't have the intention of being mean, but this page is starting to look more like an advertisement than an actual encyclopedic article and is to the point that I do not know where to start the cleanup. School spirit is a good thing, and sharing your knowledge of a certain area is as well, but most of the stuff in this article aren't even close to relevant for someone not actually knowledgeable about the school looking for information at a glance about Memorial - it's not likely that this theoretical person will want to know about every good year the Lacrosse team has had in the past two decades, that the drill team is unverifiably "award winning", nor every other event and organization at the school. Some condensing is needed, and some of the vanity name-dropping should also go away. This could definitely be a good article, but the vanity has gotten a bit away from people here. NPOV and general relevancy

Please begin cleaning this article up using the policies at Neutral Point of View, No Personal Attacks, and No Original Research. Good luck to the editors of this page, I realize how much time you've put into it. However, if phrases such as

"These attempts were futile though, since Mr. Johnson is not as nice as most think."

Regarding Citations

Regarding citations... I think it's impossible to cite some of the things our friend Wesley Pinkham flagged as needing it. It is very unlikely one will find an internet source that proves that the high school orchestra played at Walt Disney World, though it most certainly did happen. On a similar note, good luck finding a source that indicates that the band performed for Roger Clemens. That occured in front of Clemens' private residence and wasn't exactly a huge media event. I think most people can assume in good faith that what is contained is the article is factual and it is not necessary to have it so widely marked up with footnotes. 137.113.14.172 18:10, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

I understand your concerns completely, and so I'd like to explain my reasoning behind the citation markings. Firstly, it's not so terrible that an article is peppered by these templates, and in itself shows a good faith effort in providing factuality. Keep in mind what this article looked like only a few days ago; this marked improvement should be regarded as a good starting point for digging out the information. However, high school articles are known to be peppered with peacock and weasel words, and as a result, phrases such as "award winning" should either be cited or expanded with examples of these awards. Examples can most likely be obtained by going to the teacher's room and looking at their wall! Often times a teacher will hang the awards of their program wherever they can find a place. Teachers are usually very helpful in regard to WP articles, so don't be afraid to ask. If your school maintains archives, there's a good chance the information would be documented in school newspapers. While school newspapers don't qualify as a full citation under most situations, it certainly works in a school article. Assuming your school DOES keep copies of newspapers and yearbooks, a simple citation to that article could be made. While the source is not readily available to the public, its existence certainly doesn't hurt. Secondly, the citation markings can be seen almost like a checklist, completing one citation after another. While it may seem tedious, this job can be taken by the myriad editors there have been from your high school and really simplified.

There are a lot of simple things that can be done to improve this article. I encourage you to create a to-do list by using {{To do}} and then editing the subsequent page. Some starter topics could include acquiring statistics for ethnic make-up, student population and (new) standardized test scores, re-writing sections on specific sports teams to include championships and other such notabilities, creating an image/chart for the feeder pattern. I'd like to see the editors taht were so intent on archiving the history of their school continue to use that interest to make a great Wikipedia article. I'm sure the Schools Wikiproject would be happy to host a great high school page as an example format for future pages. • Considering the drivel thrown up here by some individuals, that would be quite the assumption - that good faith (even on parts of the article that probably are relevant and true) ran out once the article became more about vanity and less about the actual subject. The article needs a lot of work for people to assume things in good faith, and if there weren't actually a bit of useful information in this article, I would say to just trash the entire thing and start over. • You don't necessarily need an online source, but just a reliable source. But I have a hard time believing that there isn't an online source for the Walt Disney World bit - I'm sure there has to be some schedule or something on the Walt Disney World site about orchestra performances, on so-and-so date and so-and-so school/band. There is no good faith in Wikipedia; Wikipedia is not a publisher of original thought, and thus everything needs to be cited. As it is Wikipedia has a lot of problems with its credibility since anybody can edit the page; citations are the only way to claim credibiliity. Hbdragon88 06:07, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

I removed Mary Lou Rhetton (sp?) from the notable alumni section. She didn't attend MHS. It was her husband (Shannon Kelly) who did.

regarding mary lou retton: respectfully, I'm certain you're incorrect. She and her husband live in my parents' neighborhood in Houston and I have spoken with both of them on several occasions. Now I realise this testimony is completely unverifiable but she has mentioned more than once to me that she attended MHS along with her husband. UPDATE: I've checked a couple of sources and they seem to have conflicting information. One source says she went to Fairmont HS in WV, however another source says she and her family moved to houston in 1982 for her to pursue gymnastics and stayed there. In 1982 she would have been 14, just a year or less out of high school. So how could she have gone to high school in west virginia? Which is correct? How do we know? Feeder Schools

Does anyone care whether or not one student from River Oaks Baptist may or may not have attended Memorial at some point during the year? I thought that even if a web page on the River Oaks Baptist site says that one student who graduated there ended up at Memorial, that fact alone wasn't noteworthy enough to be part of the page. I'd be interested to hear other people's thoughts.

• What I was really trying to say is that students from private schools, including ROBS, go on to Memorial. What if ROBS specifically was not mentioned and it only referred to "private schools"? WhisperToMe (talk) 03:14, 22 May 2008 (UTC)
• My main point was that I thought something like this wasn't particularly noteworthy.   • Well of course everyone else attended "Some other school" - but since this is a public school it is noteworthy to say whether numbers of students from private schools go to Memorial.   • But you act as though this is something so odd as to be noteworthy. I would guess there are a number of public schools in Houston that can point to a few students that once attended private school. But it really isn't that noteworthy unless you can show this is some kind of trend, i.e. that Memorial has a large number of former private school students attending it. The citation you had showed exactly one student went to Memorial from ROB, which has no high school. That just is not noteworthy.
