Mary French. Her bio is complicated by a bit of polishing of her ancestry - her mother was a spiritualist electromagnetic healer; her mother's father a farmer rather than a physician, her sister, Dr. Belle French Patterson seems to have been a little fringe-ish as well- but also by Sheldon's somewhat Münchhausenesque storytelling late in her life. Some sources state that Frank R Sherwin was MFS's brother-in-law -Sherwin appears to have named a horse after her, and that she had an early unsuccessful marriage before Sheldon.
