Talk:Maximilian armour

Latest comment: 12 years ago by Idot in topic Context

apparently first made for the Emperor Maximilian I. Maximillian probably used it himself when he was a young prince and presumably presented it to his uncle Sigmund[1].

In fact he gifted other kind of armour - a high gothic armour

Can someone add some historical context? By the time this stuff is in fashion, guns are also clearly in fashion. Where does this fit? Is it tournament armor? 'Field Marshal Plate'? Was it even intended for battlefield use? How does it fit with German Reiters, the caracole, the various wars of religion? Who wore it? Was it mass produced? • it was already out of use before reiters invented. and it was a battle armour during rule of Maximilian I. the last armour was made for Maximilian II, but I don't think that he engaged reiters in this armour (Idot (talk) 17:05, 22 March 2012 (UTC))Reply
  • it was very expensive bullet-proof battle armour made for knights, so it was not mass produced. when handguns become better all fluted armour including maximilian armours were out of use, while bullet-proof armours without fluting (a bit cheaper but much heavier than ones with fluting) were still in use (Idot (talk) 17:25, 22 March 2012 (UTC))Reply
