It's a very good article, pointing out a few items I had missed and failed to link together, but one thing I found wrong was the note at the end of it, saying Mat had only gained the memories of a single man, King Aemon of Manetheran. While it is speculated by a character early in the story that Mat may be a descendant of Aemon, on page 81 of book five, The Fires of Heaven, it says "He could remember dying more times than he wanted to think of."

Read it again. It says prior to Rhuidean he only had the memories of a single man. The holes in his mind weren't filled in with the memories of other men until after he went through the doorframe in Rhuidean. Keolah 03:31, 20 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Death and Rebirth

edit

Possibly referring to the time Rahvin's lightning bolts killed him and then Rand's Balefire rendered him alive again? The only thing I'm not certain of is whether or not he actually did die (Asmodean crisped, Aviendha clearly dead, but I don't recall him checking to see if Mat was alive or just a little fried.) 68.225.242.19 08:12, 20 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Is there any reference for the Odin connection? It seems like original research. Supersheep 15:07, 23 August 2006 (UTC) >>The prophecy was referring to the time Mat was hanged. luck

edit

Just out of curiousity, does anyone here know whether Mat's good fortune is a result of being ta'veren, or from the tainted dagger? His luck was not apparent until Book 3 "The Dragon Reborn", and in Book 1 "The Eye of the World" he speaks of his father thrashing him for owing money from gambling debts, implying that he lost more often than won. But when Perrin tells Abell that Mat is winning money, in the Shadow Rising, Abell agrees that that sounds like what Mat would do.

One possible solution is that Mat's ta'veren ability matures as the novels progress (book 3, chapter 30: He had always won more than he lost, as far as he could remember.. He could always remember being lucky. But somehow, his memories from Emond's Field did not show him being as lucky as he had been since leaving). When you look at Rand, his ta'veren affects also weren't as noticeable until book 3. Perhaps his 'luck' didn't blossom until after the taint was lifted, or it simply became more noticeable afterwards. Or maybe the taint suppressed his ta'veren luck? In any case, I think there is more reason for his luck to be connected to him being ta'veren, than being connected to the dagger. 203.33.166.212 —Preceding signed but undated comment was added at 08:38, 7 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Tylin

edit

Mat liked Tylin. What he didn't like is his position as "Pet". 88.159.74.100 08:50, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sure he liked Tylin... after several sessions of less-than-willing sexual contact between them. If you want, feel free to link to Stockholm Syndrome. -- Unknown User, 11:42, 7 October 2007

Dying before Tarmon Gai'don?

edit

"It can also be assessed, that he would be killed prior to Tarmon Gai'don, severing his link to the Horn of Valere, and be raised as a Hero with the sounding of the Horn at the Last Battle, effectively living again as a part of what once was" Huh? I don't quite see how this assessment is consistent with the information presented in the books and the Wiki article (specifically the mention of the outrigger novel, which suggests Mat survives). The more likely assessment of Mat's character is that he sounds the Horn in the Last Battle and leads the forces of the Light. 124.171.28.124 12:57, 16 November 2007

Loki, Odin, historical comparisons

edit

The material concerning Norse legends and historical comparisons, while interesting, is still just speculation and therefore a violation of Wikipedia:No Original Research. These encyclopedic articles are supposed to be limited to verifiable research, and can't be used to express an editor's opinions or advance a position, however well-thought-out they may be. Robert Jordan had repeatedly stated that the world of the Wheel of Time is our own world both in the very distant past and also the very distant future, and that events happening at the time of Rand and company are remembered as garbled half-fragments and transformed into our current legends. With that said, the connections between Mat and Odin are so overwhelming as to be all-but blatant. Isn't it valid to point out these things as obvious inspirations and influences on the creation of the character? I have seen such things in other articles on works of fiction, listed under influences on character design and plot. I think it is VERY appropriate to include this stuff in the article, considering the obvious parallels between Mat and Odin and the connection between the events of the story and our present real-world mythology, as stated by the author. Future prediction and results

edit

I remember there was such section on Rand, can we add a section about the future prediction told by Eelfins and the result so far? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.55.14.182 (talk) 02:28, 22 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
