The common academic name spelling in English requires the definite article (al, etc.) and "son of" (ibn) to be written small, unless it occurs at the beginning of a sentence. The article must be followed by a hyphen. Examples:
I know some perceive it as irreverential, but it's the common practice. If administrative units (national governments, regional or municipal authorities) decree a different English spelling as normative, this concerns only the modern administrative units, not the historical or archaeological sites.
