Avoid dubious and unsourced statements from being added to this article

Do not add unsourced and dubious statements into this article. Please remember that Mangalore is a Featured Article on Wikipedia. Add reliable citations to this article.

Do not add incorrect information regarding the languages, region, economy and images of Mangalore

Dear editors,
Please remember that Mangalore is a Featured Article of an "Encyclopedia". While editing, keep in mind that you're adding or removing contents from an encyclopedic article and not any other magazine, news paper, blog or a travel website.
Some of the common places of adding misleading / incorrect information to the Mangalore article include:
1. Offcial language
2. Region
3. Copyrighted images (Not your own pictures regarding Mangalore)
4. Karnataka's 2nd largest city.
5. Montage image of the article.

Do not include your subjective opinion about the above mentioned contents on this article. Add appropriate citations and references to these statements. Prove them with facts and valid sources. Coming to the Montage image for the article, try to click your own pictures of Mangalore and form a Montage. Do not rely on external sources for images.
Remember when you add misleading information to this article, you put its Featured Article(FA) status at risk. So as an editor, think before you update the contents of this article.

I want to quote: "Just because you don't understand or agree upon something that doesn't mean it's wrong"
If you shall face this please do one of the following
1. Try to go through the citation(if exists)
2. Do some basic research and try to add the missing citation
3. Request for citation instead of removing the content.

Please refrain from removing or modifying info without proper justification.

"Kambala" and "Korikatta" contents should not be added to this article

Kambala and Korikatta are controversial sports. Animal rights activists and many people in Mangalore have requested to ban these sports.
Please do some Research online regarding these sports. Animals are treated badly in these sports.
Adding citations to controversial contents does not justify anything. I request the Wikipedia editors of Mangalore - Please do not promote these sports in this article. Kambala and Korikatta contents should not be added. it gives a negative impression about Mangalore city. Simple-man-everyday (talk) 18:11, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

Well if they exist in Mangalore, then they should be added. Whether it gives positive or negative impression or it is supposed to be banned or not, that's none of our business. Xavier449 (talk) 20:52, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
Can you please revert your changes on the same. Xavier449 (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 106.216.166.204 (talk) 02:10, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
Mr. Xavier449, Have you done research online regarding the background of such sports ?

Check these out:
http://www.deccanherald.com/content/518871/kambala-still-illegal-govt-must.html
http://www.bangaloremirror.indiatimes.com/news/state/Animal-Welfare-Board-of-India-Kambala-Surathkal-races-FIR/articleshow/45752743.cms?prtpage=1

Kambala and Korikatta have violated the Indian Penal Code (IPC). These sports are cruel to animals. Animals are tortured during these sports.
Why are you promoting such contents online ? There are many other sports which can be added other than these 2 sports.
Simple-man-everyday (talk) 02:23, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

No one is promoting anything here on Wikipedia. Just because someone is an animal rights lover, that doesn't mean Wikipedia shouldn't have an article on the Gadhimai festival in Nepal. Just because many Muslims object the graphical representation of Muhammad in any form, that doesn't mean we should not include images in the Muhammad article. Kindly read Talk:Muhammad/images. Wikipedia works on the principles of Neutral point of view, non-censorship and reliable sources for its content. Wikipedia doesn't care about what you think, I think, the PETA thinks, or what the Indian Government thinks. We try to maintain a neutral point of view, and the fact is Kambala and Korikatta are popular sports in Mangalore as of today, as per the cited reliable sources, though you are absolutely true that several litigation have been filed to ban them. Seems fine to mention about the litigations in the article.
Unless you have some reliable sources which corroborate the fact that these sports are no longer popular or played in Mangalore, you should revert your changes immediately. Since this is a featured article, I'll be carefully monitoring the changes here.Xavier449 (talk) 04:39, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Not to Forget Wiki has articles on Jallikattu, Bullfighting and Rape. That doesn't mean we are promoting bad things. Always try to be neutral. (talk to Me)

There is no problem in having Wiki articles related to Kambala, Korikatta and Animal cruelty.
The problem arises when those contents (text and images) are embedded and linked into the Mangalore article.
Many people view the Mangalore article as it is a prominent place in Karnataka after Bangalore. You are trying to promote these 2 cruel sports by adding such contents to Mangalore.

Simple-man-everyday (talk) 03:11, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

I just didn't agree when you said "Why are you promoting such contents online ?". because we aren't promoting anything here.

I have no problem if Korikatta(cockfight) is not included in Mangalore article
. Being one who has witnessed both the sports in question I can say korikatta is cruel in many ways. Kambala is a traditional sport, if Kambala is cruel then using millions of drought bullocks in fields is cruel too, which is a traditional way of farming in India. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CodePanda (talkcontribs) 05:37, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Request the Administrators and Editors of Mangalore article to watch out for false Kerala information being added

There is an Anonymous user with IP address 93.169.82.140, trying to add false and baseless information to the Mangalore article. So far, in the infobox he /she has added:
Mangalore is in Kerala state, Mangalore is under coastal Kerala region.
Even placed the Kerala map instead of Karnataka.
I request the Wikipedia Administrators and Editors of the Mangalore article to take note of these activities that are occurring now.
Please protect the Mangalore article from vandalism.

I was baffled looking at the change history.
Point to be noted there exist a small place called "Mangalapuram" in Kerala. I guess may be the user is noob and just messed up. but this doesn't make sense cos that place is far, far away from Mangalore and i don't think it's called Mangalore in English. (talk:CodePanda)

Tulu is the official and widely spoken language in Mangalore. Tulu has its own script

Tulu is the official language of Mangalore. Kannada is a language imposed by Karnataka. Many people study Kannada and are not native speakers in Mangalore. Tulu language has its own script. Kannada should not be placed as an official language in the Mangalore article. 103.240.136.2 (talk) 05:53, 2 November 2016 (UTC)

Tuluvas are the largest ethnic group in Mangalore, not the Kannadigas

Tulu speakers are the largest ethnic group in Mangalore, followed by Konkani and Beary. Kannada and Malayalam are minority languages in Mangalore. Hence Tulu is the official language of Mangalore. It has its own script.
Kannada is not an official language by any means in Mangalore.

Regarding Malayalam

Is Malayalam native language of Mangalore?
Answer: No
So does that mean you can not include Malayalam in this article?
Answer: Not at All.
I have no idea why some people are fighting over Malayalam here. There are people speaking Malayalam in Mangalore (yes native Mangaloreans). Similar pattern I had observed in the Kasaragod article where Some people are trying to remove Tulu,Kannada,Beary, Konkani language from the article. Please do not add unsourced sections such as "Tourism" with peacock terms into this Article

A completely unsourced section called "Tourism" with plenty of peacock terms were added to the Mangalore Article.
There were no valid citations found in that section
.
Please do remember that adding such sections will put the "Featured Article" status of Mangalore at huge risk.
I request the users/editors to add only information with valid citations and statements which comply with the Wikipedia policy and guidelines.

Mangalore is not a clean or a less polluted city

Mangalore did not make it to the top 10 Indian rankings of sanitation as per the Ministry of Urban Development.
Even if air pollution was concerned, it is not a less polluted city by any means.
Please refer this news article on January 29 2017:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mangaluru/mangalurus-ambient-air-quality-takes-a-beating/articleshow/56854645.cms

Hence the "clean city" statement is removed.
Contents in Wikipedia have to be written from a neutral point of view.

Malayalam is a regional language in Mangalore

In Mangalore, Malayalam is spoken by a sizeable number of speakers. The widely spoken languages in Mangalore include Tulu, Konkani, Beary, Kannada, Malayalam and Koraga.
It is accepted and clear that Kannada and English are the administrative (official) languages of Mangalore city.
Regarding Malayalam, there are a number of speakers around the Mangalore Railway Station. Kerala Samajam is present in Mangalore. Large number of students from Kerala (Malabar, Kochi and Travancore regions) study in Mangalore.
Many hotels, hospitals, medical stores and jewellery stores are tri-lingual in Mangalore city. The sign boards have text in English, Kannada and Malayalam.
Many doctors and nurses in Mangalore are well versed in Malayalam.
Mangalore is the only non-metro city outside Kerala to have the printing office of Malayala Manorama (largest circulating Malayalam newspaper).
Theatres such as Amrith Talkies and Platinum have run a large number of Malayalam movies.
Hence Malayalam can be included as a regional language in the Infobox of the Mangalore article.
However, it is very clear that both Kannada and English are the administrative (official) languages of Mangalore city.

Tulu is the Lingua franca in Mangalore

Editors of this article should avoid Recentism

Mangalore had undergone a Featured Article review process, as explained in an earlier comment by a user. The main flaw found was that the Mangalore article included a lot of Recentism.
Too much information about recent events were found earlier in the Mangalore article.
The article has been brought back to Featured Article standard a few days ago, after the 2nd round of review.
Any further incidents of Recentism or failing to comply with WP: core content policies, will certainly lead to the removal of Mangalore as a Featured Article from Wikipedia.

Conflicting statements

"It is the second major city in Karnataka state in all aspects after the capital city Bangalore." However the same claim of being the second city of Karnataka is made about Hubli-Dharwad. Can anyone determine which claim is correct please? 10:15, 7 March 2019 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Normanthehat (talkcontribs)

Mr. Normanthehat (talk),
Mangalore is indeed the 2nd major city of Karnataka, and not Hubli-Dharwad.
I hope you are aware that having a large area or a large population doesn't mean that the place is more developed, major or more influential than others.
  • Are China and India (World's 2 largest populated countries) more developed than UK, Australia, USA, Germany, Japan, Canada, Norway, Switzerland or even Singapore?
  • Are Mumbai, Dhaka or Lagos more developed than Melbourne, Toronto, Seattle or Copenhagen?
Hubli-Dharwad has a larger area and large population than Mangalore, but it is definitely not more developed than Mangalore, and hence it isn't Karnataka's 2nd major city. While Bangalore is easily the 1st major city and large in all aspects due to the job opportunities, better infrastructure etc.,
But here are some points as to why Mangalore is the 2nd major city of Karnataka, and also the 2nd most developed city after Bangalore
  • Mangalore has the highest literacy rate in Karnataka
  • Mangalore has an International Airport
  • Mangalore is the only major seaport of Karnataka
  • Mangalore has many educational institutions, and education is given utmost importance here. NITK features among the top 10 Engineering colleges of India in many surveys. It also has top medical colleges such as KMC within the city
  • Mangalore is the first and only city in India to have a 3D Planetarium
  • Very Large network of concreted / white-topped roads within the city
  • 5 National Highways pass through Mangalore (NH 66, NH 75, NH 73, NH 169, NH 275)
  • Presence of cruise tourism, and a significant tourism hub. Several foreign cruise ships dock at Mangalore every year
  • Mangalore Central and Junction railway stations are the highest revenue generators for the Palakkad Division of the Southern Railway zone
  • Dakshina Kannada district has the 2nd largest economy in Karnataka. With the exception of Mangalore city, the rest of DK district is predominantly a forest region. Hence it shows the prosperity single-handedly offered by Mangalore to the Economy of DK district and the entire Karnataka state
  • Mangalore has the 2nd highest Human development Index (HDI) of 0.83 in Karnataka
  • Mangalore has the lowest number of slums among all the Karnataka cities and towns (1.55% of the city population according to the 2011 census). This percentage is also among the lowest in India along with Trivandrum and Kochi
These are the factors that clearly prove that "Mangalore is the second major city in Karnataka state in all aspects after the capital city Bangalore".
