Pokémon name

edit

Please do not change this article back to Manafi. While the aforementioned spelling is correct as a basic literal romanization of マナフィ, it is not the official trademarked spelling used by Nintendo, Game Freak, et al. According to Filb.de -- whose owner has made a good number of contributions to Pokémon-related articles on the German Wikipedia -- the official spelling is Manaphy.

On a side note, the article on Filb.de (linked above) also has three additional Pokémon names: タマンタ Tamanta, ペラップ Perappu, and ブイゼル Buizeru. These are very likely to be the names of the three silhouettes that appear in the scan that revealed Manaphy. - Wonk619 16:34, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Or rather unofficial spelling. Although we were lucky in the case of Lucario being Lucario, I wouldn't jump the gun in concluding that Manaphy is for sure the official way to spell マナフィ. Example would be that before Manectric's Japanese name, ライボルト, was spelt out in plain and simple English, people had believed it to be Raibolt. However, it's official name is Livolt. In particular, I would suggest keeping its Japanese name as Manafi until we have an official conclusion. Japanese Katakana also is tricky when it comes to Pokemon names. For example, it's been recently revealed that the "Wave Guiding Hero" Aaron (as in Moses's brother Aaron) (アーロン) is really Arlon (as from GameFreak's site: http://www.gamefreak.co.jp/movie05/arlon1.jpg). But there's other cases. エアームド (Eaamudo) is Airmd, プラスル (Purasuru) is Prasle, things like this. You can pick some more out from this list, and it's for certain that all of the RBY and RSE generation Pokemon's "English-Japanese" names (or intended name as its called) are correct, taken from official sources. A good number of the GSC generation was confirmed, but another good number of it is just guessing. XenoL-Type 10:20, 14 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
There are few sources more official than a trademark application which specifically includes both kana and a romanized form. -Murgatroyd, 07:49, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
What sources claim that マナフィ is officially Manaphy? XenoL-Type 00:53, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
特許電子図書館 商標出願・登録情報, or, Industrial Property Digital Library Trademark Application & Registration Information - search and you will find that マナフィ is registered as Manaphy, just as マニューラ is registered as Manyula and ルカリオ as Lucario. As for the filenames - I'm inclined to ignore them. Especially since the offical movie website used Aron. This story gives another example of computer technicians screwing up romanisation. - 振霖T 13:14, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
The name マナフィ is not registered with Nintendo, GameFreak, or Creatures. Look up Latios. I get:
(732) 【権利者】
【氏名又は名称】 任天堂株式会社
【氏名又は名称】 株式会社クリーチャーズ
【氏名又は名称】 株式会社ゲームフリーク
Manafi in that same general area registers as
(731) 【出願人】
【氏名又は名称】 竹尾 英敏
And further down the line on (30), it talks something about ice cream, coffee, cocoa, hamburger pizzas, random food items.- XenoL-Type 7:40, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
Merchandising codes. Trademarks have scope, you know. Of course they would include everything they thought might be worth turning into a gimmick. In fact, you will find similar codes listed forルカリオ and マネネ. As for the registrant - well, Nintendo stopped registering trademarks under their own name a long time ago - as early as the FR/LG era. Look up, for example, ウソハチ or マニューラ - before July 2005, the same name was also listed under ルカリオ and マネネ. A bunch of the red-herring names, like Water Blue, are still under the pseudonyms. The registrant of Water Blue, in particular, also was listed for the ゴンベ entry before July.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Zhen Lin (talkcontribs) 19:01, 15 February 2006 (UTC).Reply
If they really wanted to copyright any and all products, why aren't most of the Pokemon copyrighted when nearly all of them exist as figurines? I've tried Manectric, Magnemite, Mangeton, Electrode, and recently Slaking, all with no search results. However, looking up Grovyle, it's copyrighted. And another interesting thing is that Torkoal (just seeing if Ash's Pokemon were in the mix) is copyrighted by three entities in the 80's. XenoL-Type 13:12 February 16, 2006 (UTC)
Alright, if I'm not mistaken, タマンタ Tamanta, ブイゼル Buizeru, and ペラップ Perappu were recently confirmed as the names of the three new Pokémon. This means that all the trademarks registered under 竹尾 英敏 have been confirmed as Pokémon names, therefore confirming Manaphy as the official romanization for マナフィ...unless this all pure coincidence, which is extremely unlikely. Wonk619 00:09, 4 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Am I the only person who wants to romanize this one as 'Manavi'?—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.12.117.5 (talk) 15:51, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Silhouetted Pokemon

edit

Is it all right if Wikapedia had an article on the three new Pokemon in silhouettes as a unit? when more info is revealed of course, we can seperate each of them with their own articles. Cabby2 19:01, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

No, it wouldn't be alright for the three silhouettes to have an article as a unit, particularly because there is only a one-month period between the appearance of these silhouettes and when Coro Coro unveils them in their next issue. Actually, by that schedule, we'll be able to write about the three new Pokemon in about three weeks, because so far it's been over a week since Manaphy was revealed in the last Coro Coro. Three separate articles will be begun on them with their fully revealed images once the next issue comes. Erik the Appreciator 04:13, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Chao?

edit

Manaphy has an appearance that's rather similar to the Chao of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Round body, big eyes, a floating bubble (or in this case stalks) above the head, and a rather fluid body shape altogether. Might there be any significance to the similarities? Sketch-The-Fox 22:06, 16 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

No way. Sonic is a SEGA game. Pokemon is Nintendo.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 202.69.183.2 (talk) 13:09, 22 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

True. However, when Manaphy first came out, everyone immediately noted its resemblance to the Chao, so I think we should at least make that point in the Characteristics section. I'll input it and leave it at that. Erik the Appreciator 04:17, 24 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
If you do that, then you need to note that he also looks like Dengakuman from Looney Tunes65.135.11.171 18:31, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think you meant to say from Bobbobobobo or w/e it is called...because Dengakuman redirects to a bobaubabubba page. Sorry, but I don't respect bobbobuba so I don't care that I purposely misspell it.Timekeeper 03:00, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Manafy... Manene... Manyula... what's with all these new "man" Pokémon? -WindFish 23:27, 25 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ehh, well, I wouldn't suppose there's a connection. Maybe it's a Japanese quirk they're into right now, but they sure wouldn't have these names once they show up in American-named Pokemon products. Erik the Appreciator 20:27, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Voyage pokemon?

edit

Where does that come from? Toastypk 19:59, 4 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I believe that came from a coro coro issue, or one of those Japanese sources. Serebii.net revealed it in a news post. Erik the Appreciator 18:24, 12 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

i think maybe the answer to its classification lies within the next pokemon movie.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 4.184.247.148 (talk) 14:53, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

a manaphy connection

edit

there is a rumored connection between hydoran and manaphy. it has something to do with the kyogre/groudon war that occured long ago on the pokemon planet. Prince or Princess?

edit

Manaphy is advertised as the Prince of the Sea, but Pokémon Ranger refers Manaphy as Princess of the Sea. I'm confused here... 72.82.35.60 19:07, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Japanese is umi no ōji (海の王子). Ōji is most commonly translated as "prince," but in the strictest, strictest literal translation sense, it simply means "the king's child" or "royal child," so "princess" isn't technically incorrect, although "princess" is usually conveyed with ōjo (王女, this actually has the kanji for "girl" in it) or hime ()…Anyway, the point is, "princess" isn't completely incorrect, per se, but it is an issue of consistency.—ウルタプ 19:15, 20 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Necessary?

edit

Was it really necessary to return Manaphy to the sea? I mean, Phantom has been arrested, May loves Manaphy, and the sea seems to be just fine without a ruler. Like America is fine without a King, although President is necessary for some decisions we make. I'm just asking your opinion. Happy editing!65.103.61.154 18:03, 7 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, I believe the reason they returned Manaphy to the sea is because there could be other evil. Team Rocket, for example. Although I highly doubt they would get Manaphy. But it is possible for Phantom to get out of prison and try to take Manaphy. - Go to my profile to see the sites I go to. 21:52, 7 July 2007 (UTC)hyuuag-samaReply
