I was there in '65. I was assigned to 46th Commnunications Squadron, Second Air Force, SAC at Barksdale AFB, LA as a ground radio operator communicating with SAC bombers and tankers. As part of an AF-wide call, I was sent for temporary duty to 5th Communications Squadron, Tachikawa AB, Japan (part of 315th Air Division) where my radio work involved talking with squadron mobile teams all over Vietnam and southeast Asia. The "movement designator" for all of that group of temporary duty assignments was "Top Dog 13", so we had an unofficial patch made up featuring the cartoon character "Goofy". After about four months, I was sent further TDY to Mactan AB, Philippines with a new mobile team. The purpose of this team was to open up the Mactan strip for use by C-130 aircraft that would be ferrying ordnance into Vietnam. On arrival, I found a "tent city" and on stepping off the C-124 that brought me there, I observed the ramp area lined on both sides with many pickup trucks, all bearing the "EOD" front license plate (Explosive Ordnance Disposal). There was already a team of operators from 5th Mobile Communications Group on-site to provide air/ground communications, etc. As we were awaiting Philippine government approval to perform our function, we had nothing to do for over a week except sleep, eat, go to the Airmen's Club, etc. When we were finally given approval, we set up our radios and other equipment and began the task of handling the usual manifests (passengers/cargo) and itineraries via radio that would support the operation. At the end of about two weeks more, I was recalled to return to the US (fiancee was having medical problems and she was in the same squadron in LA). At age 71, that's about all I can remember now.
