Supposed bad smell edit

Japanese sources (WP:ja, plant books etc, which are likely to be reliable) do not mention any bad smell, and there are numerous websites on which Japanese writers ask "Why skunk cabbage?" since it does not smell bad. The genus Lysichiton includes the American "skunk cabbage", and the WP:en article (again likely to be reliable) says that this does smell. The name "Asian skunk cabbage" therefore does not imply that the plant stinks*, only that it is _related_ to a plant that stinks. I don't know what the UK reference actually says, but I guess it simply confirms my guess that this plant does not stink at all.

  • I wrote "smells", then remembered Dr Johnson.

...Later: so I rewrote it. Can someone check what the UK reference says, or that it is in line with what I wrote: "mentions a sweet smell".

Armitage and Phillips write "There are conflicting reports concerning the smell of Lysichiton camschatcensis. Thomas (1976) says the flowers have a sweet smell as does Stearn (1932), though the latter also notes that others have found them to have no smell at all. Our experience of plants at Wisley is that the flowers smell very disgusting, though they are not quite so offensive as those of L. americanus." (p. 157 of the reference in the article)
So it seems best to say that the smell is variable. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:07, 23 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
