I'm researching this quite thoroughly, and Bridgers wrote this song in 1909. The music was based on Hans Engelmann's "Melody of Love" in 1903, a popular tune of the day. Bridgers lost his wife and three sons in the house fire of his in-laws in Harrodsburg, Kentucky on March 26, 1911---well AFTER he wrote the song. However, it subsequently became famous, and people have retold the story in the wrong order so that "the legend has become fact." But we can get it right here. Bridgers was a great evangelist.

Take a look here; the current pastor of the church that Bridgers used to pastor has searched it out. "He Keeps Me Singing" was first published in 1909; the fire tragedy occurred in 1911. Source: http://ufdc.ufl.edu/UF00028361/00271/9?search=luther+%3dbridgers
