Talk:Luftflotte 5

Merge edit

  • Well, I'd demur at present. There's no explanation on this merge proposal to say why they should be merged. It looks at present (and both articles are as clear as mud, so I've no idea of the truth of it) like these are two different units. They (or it) could do with a re-write, to make it clear what they are talking about. Any offers? Xyl 54 (talk) 11:41, 9 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

(Query) edit

I'm confused. . . .The invasion of Norway took place on April 9th. Luftflotte 5 was formed on April 12th and only active from April 15th. How could it be involved in planning the invasion and controlling air operations? It seems to me Luftflotte 5 was an administrative set-up that would become operational AFTER the succesful invasion - not before. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.146.72.151 (talk) 17:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Well the invasion started on 9 April, but the Norwegian campaign lasted two months, and Norway was occupied territory ‘til the end of the war; and Luftfotte 5 was responsible for German air operations throughout pretty much all that time. So the statement is accurate enough. But if you can think of a better way to phrase it, make a suggestion. Xyl 54 (talk) 17:17, 12 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Merge, again edit

I notice these articles have been merged now.
There was a merge discussion above but I wouldn’t have said there was any consensus to carry it out. The argument against a merger was that the other article had some serious problems (not least because it was entirely unclear what it was referring to).
This page is about Luftflotte 5, a recognized unit with a five year service history. As far as I could see the other page was a conflation of Luftwaffe units serving in Finland at the end of the war, under a title that has no provenance anywhere. It was also unsourced, but appears to have been lifted bodily from an external website, which is never a good idea. Now the whole mess has been transposed to here, giving undue weight to it on this page.
This article already has an outline of the unit, which contains the phrases "In 1944 these formations were reorganized again; Nord Ost became...Ff 3" and "On the ground...LgK Finnland became K.G. Finnland, with a similar remit in Finland and, later, northern Norway": It also has a table of sub-units, listing all of them, not just the ones that served in Finland, and puts them clearly in context. I suggest these adequately describe the entire content of the other page, which could be deleted from here as duplication without any loss (and probably some improvement) to this article.
If there are no objections I propose to do that. Xyl 54 (talk) 17:07, 12 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
