Talk:List of the busiest airports in the Republic of Ireland

Imponderable title. edit

It's too big. It's got to be shortened. No list in wiki assumes that it must be 100%. They list the most important. Same with this list. "The busiest" is therefore redundant". Could we also dispense with "List of" ? Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:32, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Laurel I thaught that myself when I saw it, I will drop a line to the editor who moved it to see if there isnt a compromise solution.Murry1975 (talk) 12:38, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I returned the article to its original title for a few reasons, partly for consistency with other similar articles (e.g. List of the busiest airports in Europe, List of the busiest airports in the United States and Busiest airports in the United Kingdom by total passenger traffic), though there is no strict consistency there! Mainly though because 'busiest' is the most important and correct word as the airports which appear on this page are only the largest few by annual passenger throughput in the RoI. The amended title Airports in the.... would have to list all licensed airports in the RoI to be the correct title. A shorter title would be preferable of course, but I think the 'List of the..' article titles came about as a consequence of MOS on list articles. Perhaps List of the busiest airports in the Republic of Ireland would be better? SempreVolando (talk) 12:55, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your quick reply SempreVolando, I think the short form would be good. I cant see any objections so will we leave it here for a while and see if there are any problems with List of the busiest airports in the Republic of Ireland and if not we could change it. Mind you an article with all pasenger traffic would be good...food for my thaughts. Again thanks for the quick reply bud.Murry1975 (talk) 13:02, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Apologies I now realise I have not returned the article to it's original title Busiest Airports in the Republic of Ireland but also added List of the.... Let's see what other editors think, or perhaps we should raise the issue at WP:AIRPORTS as there is already some inconsistency with titles for these articles across wikipedia (e.g. with the UK busiest article and the USA busiest article). Thanks. SempreVolando (talk) 13:08, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Two objections. Firstly, an article with "List of.." does not have to list everything 100%. It's sufficient to list the most notable. So the statement "would have to list all licensed airports in the RoI" is incorrect. Secondly, the article does in fact list all the international airports in the RoI. Private strips like Weston are not listed but so what? Laurel Lodged (talk) 14:27, 17 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
Laurel are you for the proposal or do you have an idea of you own bud?Murry1975 (talk) 14:08, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

It isn't the term "List of..." which implies everything should be listed, it's the omission of the word 'busiest'. I think "List of" is necessary in accordance with guidelines, but if we omit busiest the title would be List of airports in the Republic of Ireland. To me that suggests all airports are listed. I think the best title is List of the busiest airports in the Republic of Ireland to avoid that potential confusion, and comply with the MOS. It also clearly states what the page is about - the busiest airports in the RoI, and their statistics. SempreVolando (talk) 14:19, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

What about "List of international airports in the Republic of Ireland"? That's what it does. It also, as a bonus, supplies statistics about some of them. Laurel Lodged (talk) 20:57, 18 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I see your logic and it's a good suggestion, but what stops Knock and Kerry (for example) from being international airports? Both offer flights to international destinations. SempreVolando (talk) 16:11, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
I fully support the inclusion of stats on Knock and Kerry. As soon as a verifiable source is found, they should of course be included. They're already list in the article BTW, just not with stats. Laurel Lodged (talk) 17:11, 19 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal edit

I propose to merge List of the busiest airports in Ireland into List of the busiest airports in the Republic of Ireland. While it does have statistics for the whole island for 2010, 2009 and 2008, the most up to date 2018 figures only have Airports in the Republic of Ireland. The historical data from outside the 3 major airports could be merged into this article, and the remaining Northern Irish airports seem to be included in List of busiest airports in the United Kingdom anyway. Is a whole Island/Regional article needed? ~ Ablaze (talk) 13:23, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Good idea Pmbma (talk) 14:25, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pmbma: - I saw you reverted my edit to List of the busiest airports in Ireland saying 2018 statistics are not out of date. Those statistics are included in List of the busiest airports in the Republic of Ireland. My question is do we want to add all regional airports to (and rename the section) three largest airports by total passenger traffic and include Knock to Inishmore? This would take away from ease of of reading and grouping from the 3 main airports and the statistics going back over a decade. Also the 2018 statistics in the Ireland page are not representative of the article, since they don't include any airports for Northern Ireland. What are you thoughts on how to proceed? ~ Ablaze (talk) 06:24, 21 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

For all the other countries in Europe that have 'list of busiest airports in...' pages we generally list either all airports or for big countries maybe the top 50. The Rep of Ireland isn't a huge country so I'm inclined to think we should include more than just the top 3 - either top 10 or all of them. A merger of the 2 pages is definitely a good idea - but I think it should try to merge as much info as possible instead of just truncation the info on one of the pages. Pmbma (talk) 09:44, 21 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Pmbma:I've included them all for 2018 on this page now, and will go back to the CSO source and add all available data for 2017 and before. The rest of the data in the all Ireland page was unsoruced. I think this merger is finalised now. ~ Ablaze (talk) 14:57, 21 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
