SATP

edit

@Rosguill, I don't understand what you mean by "SATP are effectively just citing the Indian government". I don't think it is associated with the Government of India. >>> Extorc.talk 18:18, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Extorc in its conflict with Naxalite rebels, the Indian government started publishing a list of violent encounters in the South Asian Terror Portal.[1] The same source goes on to state in a footnote 1 Some have argued that the South Asia Terror Portal is media sourced, but at the time of our exploration it was founded, developed, and run by KPS Gill, head of government counterinsurgency at the time. signed, Rosguill talk 18:25, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for providing this. Ill keep this in mind and add more secondary sources as I go on. @Rosguill >>> Extorc.talk 09:47, 30 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Rosguill I have improved the situation a bit. >>> Extorc.talk 14:12, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking this up, but it looks like there's still several entries cited solely to SATP. Further, even some of the non-government sources fall short of calling incidents terrorism. Per MOS:TERROR, we should not be assuming that acts of political violence are terrorism unless RS explicitly state that they are. signed, Rosguill talk 14:18, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Rosguill Yes, this is a process, Ill improve over time.
Addressing the MOS:TERROR, Lets look at some examples, this source, that I use extensively never uses the word terrorist to explain the attacks, but does use fidayeen which is a suicide attack. Should this be seen as a valid secondary source?
Also, I see some of the events are also not explicitly stated as terrorist attacks but carried out massacres by designated terror outfits LeT and JeM? What should we do with those? >>> Extorc.talk 15:06, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
My view is that if the list is of "terrorist incidents", we should only be including incidents clearly identified by RS as terrorism in their own words. Just because a group has been designated as a terrorist group does not mean that everything they do is terrorism. Suicide attacks are not necessarily terrorism (e.g. Kamikaze attack), and assassinations, several of which are included on the list, are almost never terrorism. Given that it seems that many of the entries in the list cannot be readily established as terrorism, it may be best to just move the page to List of instances of political violence in Jammu and Kashmir or List of violent incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, as those appear to be the common denominators. signed, Rosguill talk 15:26, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see your point. Ill work on the sourcing and then see which instances don't qualify. I am open to exploring the option of RM as well. >>> Extorc.talk 18:18, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I disagree with one aspect here though. "Just because a group has been designated as a terrorist group does not mean that everything they do is terrorism." If sources identify an organization to be a terrorist organization, the funding it receives is funding for terror, the recruitment it does is recruitment for terror and its operations are operations for terror, I dont understand what else would we call violent operations carried out by LeT JeM HM. Assassinations, Suicide attacks, IED blasts. @Rosguill
I understand this is a new page with a vast scope and there is a requirement for a proper definition of that. >>> Extorc.talk 20:43, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
We would call them what RS call them. It could be "terrorism", or it could be "militancy", "attacks", etc. Violence against military targets and the targeted assassination of individuals is not typically considered terrorism by high-quality RS. signed, Rosguill talk 21:16, 1 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think an RM targeted at ? can help. >>> Extorc.talk 14:44, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
